Democracy works best when everyone participates.

While voter turnout in Long Beach was once again disappointingly low, today we want to focus on gratitude.

To everyone who registered to vote for the first time, helped friends and neighbors get registered, educated the community about the issues, shared information about the candidates, volunteered, canvassed, made phone calls, or simply took the time to cast a ballot—thank you.

Every conversation matters. Every vote matters. Every person who engages in the democratic process helps strengthen our community and move us closer to a more equitable future.

The work doesn’t end on Election Day. Together, we must continue to educate, organize, and empower our community so that more voices are heard in every election.

For generations, Black mothers have stood at the forefront of progress, advocating for justice, protecting our children, strengthening our neighborhoods, and carrying forward the values of resilience, compassion, and courage. Whether through organizing, caregiving, mentoring, teaching, or simply showing up day after day with unwavering love, mothers continue to shape the future in powerful ways.

Today, we celebrate every mother, grandmother, aunt, guardian, and maternal figure whose care and sacrifice help move us all forward.
