The city's first MEHKO workshop since applications were available online was helpful to three potential home kitchen businesses in our network. We were a little discouraged to see that fees to get started total up to roughly $1,400 with no local funds available to offset this burden. Since our City can't seem to line up funding to support this program, as LA and SD have done - we are curious if the community would want to contribute to a fund that could be equitably distributed to Mehko applicants in the first year of the program. What say ye, Long Beach?

The next workshop will take place at McBride Park next Thursday June 4th from 1-5pm. The expertise in the room is phenomenal and all your questions can be answered by Health inspectors, Development Services, COOK Alliance, and community based organizations.

Cocina del Barrio: Mexican Culinary Tradition
🫓🌽

Join us Sunday, May 24 from 2–5 p.m. at Rancho Los Cerritos for a hands-on food and cultural workshop connected to our current exhibition *Seeds of Resilience: Barrio Americano.*

Led by ethnobotanist and local business owner Carina Lavin, the workshop explores the cultural significance of corn, nixtamalization, grinding on a metate, and making handmade tortillas — all gathered around a community comal.

"Gathering around the comal in community reawakens the ancestral memory of cooking with an open fire. These practices help us remember the foods we grew up with, the traditions that continue to nourish and connect us."* — Carina Lavin

The comal itself — brought to life by LB Fresh and PlacemakingUS with support from AARP, the Port of Long Beach, Arts Council for Long Beach, and Community Engagement — is more than a cooking surface. It's a place to gather, teach, remember, and pass something forward.
