Law enforcement officers go above and beyond the call of duty in support of Special Olympics. Southern California's Torch Run is one of the leading programs in the world, raising nearly $1.7 million in 2015 with 2,000 participants representing 200 law enforcement agencies. Torch Run activities increase public awareness and understanding of Special Olympics. Working with Special Olympics through th
e Torch Run can also accomplish many departments' community service goals by providing a helping hand outside of regular law enforcement duties. Officers are seen as friends and people, rather than uniforms. Special Olympics athletes look up to the officers, see them as their heroes, and will provide the officers with endless smiles and high-fives. In May and June, the officers will proudly carry the Special Olympics Torch, "The Flame of Hope," more than 1,500 miles and through more than 175 communities. The officers collect donations for their participation and are sponsored by civic groups, local businesses, and generous family and friends. Officers also raised money through Tip-A-Cops®, Plane Pulls, Polar Plunges, raffles, car shows, bike rides, golf tournaments, and many other events. All funds raised by law enforcement personnel go to Special Olympics Southern California. The donations are directed into expenses for athlete participation in local, regional, state, and international competitions as well as program support and development.
