Wed, 5/20 at 7pm Long Beach Public Library presents: Marcel Duchamp with Thomas Germano

Register for this presentation at: https://longbeachpl.librarycalendar.com/event/marcel-duchamp-thomas-germano-115278

Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) is one of the most influential artists of the modern and post-modern periods. Over a six-decade career, Duchamp challenged the very definition of the object/artwork, and his art has been referenced by artists so frequently, the term “Duchampian” has become an understood term we use frequently to describe ready-made, mass-produced objects incorporated as, or within a work of art.

Duchamp contributed to Cubism, Futurism, Da Da, Surrealism, Pop, and trompe l’oeil. Duchamp’s pursuits were marked by continuous reinvention and deliberate inconsistencies.

Duchamp's art will be shown first at MoMA, NYC from April 12th through August 22nd, before traveling to the Philadelphia Museum of Art Fall in the fall. A smaller version will be offered at Paris’s Grand Palais in Spring 2027. The MoMA and Philadelphia Museum will feature approximately 300 artworks offering today’s audiences the first opportunity to view the full breadth of Duchamp’s creative output. This exhibition marks the first retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States since 1973.

The Long Beach Art League is collaborating with the City of Long Beach to schedule fine art programs at the Magnolia Senior Center located at 650 Magnolia Blvd. In May Certified Zentangle Teacher Kathleen Regan taught Art & Mediation with Zentangle. Students learned a fascinating method to create beautiful images and unique meditative designs by drawing structured patterns. Congratulations to the artists who were very successful in producing beautiful one-of-a-kind artworks. Long Beach seniors, who were registered participants of the Senior Center, were eligible to attend this free program.
