Public encouraged to experience hunger during Rudd’s $10,000 "24-Hour Long Beach Hunger Strike." Long Beach nonprofit will donate up to $10,000 to local and global hunger projects on behalf of those who fast starting Sat., Sept. 15. END: Sun., Sept. 16, 2012, 10 a.m. Justin Rudd’s nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT) will donate $24 ($1/hour) on behalf of each Southern Californian that fasts (no
food/candy) during the 24-hour timeframe. Water and some juice is okay. Basically, participants will miss two meals. They will want to eat a good breakfast before the fast begins at 10 a.m. on Sat., and then not eat again until breakfast after 10 a.m. on Sunday, thus missing one lunch and one dinner. It is recommended that participants not chew gum or drink beverages with caffeine during the hunger strike. There is no advance registration, and it’s FREE to participate. For CAT to donate $24 on your behalf, send a confirmation email to organizer [email protected] on the day the fast ends, and include your name, age, and city. Teenagers will need a parent's emailed permission. Each emailed confirmation will net $24 toward the goal to donate $10,000 to local and global hunger efforts. The first $5,000 will go to Tumaini International to feed AIDS orphans in Kenya (Rudd worked with this organization during a service trip in Africa this summer). The remainder will go to hunger programs in Long Beach. Going without food for 24 hours is safe for most people. WHO CAN NOT PARTICIPATE? The following are NOT allowed to participate in this program:
- those living outside the Southern California area,
- those under age 12,
- pregnant or nursing women,
- the elderly,
- those with certain medical conditions or eating disorders. WE WANT PARTICIPANTS TO:
- Experience hunger by going without food for 24 hours.
- Learn about hunger and what is needed to fight poverty and injustice. WORLD HUNGER FACTS:
-About every 10 seconds a child in this world dies of a hunger-related cause - that's 11,000 kids younger than 5 being killed every day as a result of malnutrition.
- One in six people go to bed hungry at night.
-According to UN estimates, hunger is a direct or contributing cause in one-third to one-half of preventable child deaths. Organizers ask participants to post hunger facts on the group’s Facebook fan page: “24-Hour Long Beach Hunger Strike.”
