✨JUNETEENTH. ✨

Today & always, .

In June of 1619, the first group of enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia.
In June of 1861, the American Civil War began.
In June of 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was established.
In June of 1865, the American Civil War ended, and American slaves were freed.

Freedom is the state of not being enslaved.
Freedom is both a physical and metaphysical experience.
Slavery is both a physical and metaphysical experience.

Slavery is the phenomenon in which people are taken hostage, and ripped away from their livelihood, to serve the oppressor.

People have suffered, and continue to suffer.
Despite many attempts at ‘making things right’, pain lingers from the depths of the collective subconscious of the descendents of enslaved people.

African American folks are still suffering, and will continue to suffer, because hundreds of years of pain will take hundreds of years of healing.

Memories persist with the passing of time.
Memories become stories.
& these stories are passed down from generation to generation.
Embedded in these stories are feelings which persist even when memories begin to fade with the passing of time.

Breaking down the shackles of slavery will be never-ending, but there is still so much we can do as allies and community members to aid in this process of healing.
It is time that we acknowledge the the ‘Afro -’ experience.
