Californians Together

Californians Together Californians Together is a statewide advocacy coalition advocating to ensure academic success for English Learners.

Founded in 1998 after the passage of Proposition 227, Californians Together joined with other organizations to foster full participation in a democratic society through quality education for children and parents from undeserved communities. Some of Our Accomplishments:

- Worked for the adoption of the English Language Development Standards

- Reversed the restrictive policy of the State Board of

Education to deny bilingual classroom access to Reading First funding and secured over $20 million to serve English learners.

- Secured a total of $60 million for English learner materials in the 2004/05 and 2006/07 state budgets

- Recruited 9 school districts to join Californians Together as plaintiffs in the NCLB Testing lawsuit challenging California's English only testing policy

- Successfully working with over 70 school districts to implement the Seal of Biliteracy recognition program

- Published, "Reparable Harm," a research and policy document on Long Term English learners, and provided training across the state on the critical need for new policy and programs to address this cohort to English learners.

- Safeguarded the state funding for the English learner programs for nearly 20 years.

We were glad to be part of the 2026 First 5 California Summit, Their Futures First, alongside our partners at Early Edge California and EdTrust-West!

Our Senior Policy Associate, Early Childhood Education, Mario Snow joined partners to bring an important multilingual learner perspective to conversations about early childhood policy, systems, and the future of early learning in California.

It was a great opportunity to connect with fellow advocates, educators, policymakers, and early childhood leaders who are working to create stronger outcomes for children and families.

We’re grateful to our partners for continuing to work together to ensure multilingual children and their families are part of the conversation.

California’s schools have made important progress toward creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments for LGBTQ+ students—but challenges remain.

The Equality California Institute’s Safe and Supportive Schools Report Card highlights successes and challenges reported by California Unified School Districts as they implement LGBTQ+ inclusive programs and policies.

The report draws on data from the Safe and Supportive Schools Survey, distributed to all 345 Unified School Districts across California, providing valuable insight into where schools are making progress and where additional support may be needed.

This data can help educators, advocates, policymakers, and communities better understand the landscape of LGBTQ+ inclusion in California schools—and identify opportunities to strengthen safe and supportive environments for all students.

Math isn’t just a subject. It’s either a gateway to future opportunities or a gatekeeper that shuts students out.
