Long Island Streets January 1, 2017 Long Beach Streets became Long Island Streets, outgrowing the barrier island after 5 years of advocating for better bike-ped-transit.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman's administration quietly canceled a long-planned protected pedestrian and bicycle path on a stretch of road in East Atlantic Beach where a hit-and-run driver killed a cyclist last week, according to residents, county lawmakers and planning documents.

Traffic fatalities in Nassau rose from 67 in 2024 to at least 78 last year, according to data from Newsday’s fatality tracker, launched as part of its Dangerous Roads series.

In Suffolk, it’s not yet clear from preliminary data whether traffic fatalities rose or fell. The database counted at least 163 deaths across Long Island from vehicle crashes last year.

Free Kids Helmet Give-A-Way (while supplies last) at the Kids Bike Safety Rodeo this Saturday, June 22, 2024.

The event will take place at the Recreation Parking lot from 10am - 1pm. This event is for children ages 5 to 12. Children will have their bicycles and helmets inspected and fitted, then ride through a skills course. All children will receive bicycle safety information and a certificate of completion. There will be other fun activities, including tattoos, helmet decorating and bike raffles.

Thank you to The City of Long Beach, Long Beach Police Department with the Kiwanis Club of Long Beach and Legislator Patrick Mullaney for making this summer kick-off event possible.

This Saturday Jones Beach State Park hosts an inaugural Ironman Triathlon, which is projected to generate at least $13 million for our local economy. Athletes from 41 states and 40 other countries will be coming to compete. As part of the race, the Wantagh State Parkway will be fully closed from 5 am to 3 pm to accommodate this event. Within Jones Beach, Bay Parkway will also be closed from 5 am to 3 pm as well.

Lastly, restrictions will be in place along the multi-use path /bike path within Jones Beach. The Meadowbrook Parkway, Loop Parkway, Ocean Parkway, and the Robert Moses Parkway are not affected and fully open. Jones Beach State Park will also be accessible for beachgoers to enjoy by utilizing Field 4, Field 6, and West End 2.
