Happy International Workers’ Day!

Today we celebrate migrant and immigrant workers by marching alongside them and supporting them in their ongoing campaign fights to change their conditions in the workplace and communities. We honor their courage to continue to fight against trafficking, wage theft and all exploitation in the workplace, for their families to be freed from detention, for the basic rights to health care, food, and education, and for the right to live and thrive in one’s homeland without being forced to migrate to survive.

In the words of one caregiver to another about standing up for their rights –

“Fighting wage theft goes deeper than just missing pay checks. It is about dignity, about fairness – because when we demand fairness, we are not asking for too much. We are asking for what is right.

We are not alone in this fight. There are people and organizations ready to support. There is a growing movement that believe caregivers deserve fairness and respect.

Let’s stand firm and support each other. There is power in our voice and there is strength in standing together. It is worth fighting for. Never give up.” – Lorna, caregiver

FMC AND KA IN SACRAMENTO

Filipino Migrant Center, together with Kabataan Alliance, joined and CA Workplace Outreach Program grantees for an advocacy day to advocate for more investements to California’s working families.

We brought to state capitol testimonies from workers and worker leaders for California to increase support in worker-based non-profits and to have the resources to continue growing the worker power in California.

FMC and KA highlighted the importance of workers organizing for better conditions in the workplace, beyond just the provision of service to our working kababayans.

In the afternoon, FMC, KA, SoCal Black Worker Hub (), The Way Worker Center, Korean Immigrant Worker Alliance (), The April Parker Foundation () and many others conducted meetings with the offices of Sen. Bob Archuleta () Sen, Lola Smallwood-Cuevas () and Sen. Lola Richardson to have a dialogue on how we can ensure that California invests $30M per year for the next 5 years in working families and support the worker organizing efforts of the different organizations. We highlighted the importance of grassroots work in building worker power in our communities.

In the morning, we visited Sen. Susan Rubio () to advocate for the needs of Luis as highlighted by Defend Migrants Canpaign West LA (). We called on the senator’s office to shed light on the federally-sanctioned violence in Adelanto ICE Detention Facility.

The Filipino Migrant Center joined organizations across California for the Immigrant Day of Action (IDA) led by . As attacks in our migrant communities intensify from cuts to essential services like food assistance and access to healthcare combined with the repeated ICE raids in our most vulnerable migrant neighborhoods, it is necessary for our organizations to join together to advocate for the people we serve.

At this two-day conference and day of action, FMC had the opportunity to participate in various workshops that offered education on issues such as food security, healthcare protections and rights, worker solidarity, and more to help inform our organizing in the community. Overall, we were inspired by the work of fellow organizations who are at the forefront of uplifting migrants and migrant workers.

We closed our trip with a successful lobby visit with the office of , together with and , where we had fruitful dialogue about the real experiences migrant communities who are impacted by the continuous cutting of already limited social services and resources. As FMC, we shared our own challenges in supporting our kababayan based on the real stories of the many Filipinos facing economic insecurity, exploitation and unjust detention. We promoted the IDA policy and budget priorities that address the urgent needs of Filipinos and migrants, calling for expansion of critical services and ensuring a safety net for migrant communities statewide.
