Volunteers package food bags every Thursday at 8:30am at the Elk's Lodge in Long Beach. Each Friday afternoon elementary school children receive a backpack of healthy food and snacks. On Monday the child returns the empty backpack to their school nurse or the office to be restocked with food for the following Friday. Food4kids backpacks may include the following items: cereal, breakfast bars, oatmeal, juice, tuna kits, microwaveable Chef Boyardee pasta meals - or something similar, peanut butter crackers, soup, apple sauce, fruit cups, ravioli, vegetables, shelf stable milk, and other nutritious foods. In January 2011, Food4kids Backpacks began working with families at the Ocean Park Elementary School. In October, a program began at Long Beach Elementary. Low income families should contact their elementary school principal to find out if they qualify for the program. Program participation will be kept as confidential as possible. A parent or guardian must return a signed permission form for their child to participate. This form is available from their elementary school principal. Food4kids Backpacks is supported by the Peninsula Community, OP UM Church, Ocean Beach Presbyterian Church, Ilwaco-Long Beach Kiwanis, Long Beach Elks, Peninsula Rotary, Long Beach and Ocean Park Elementary Schools, many other businesses along the Peninsula, and many, many donations from individuals who support food4kids Backpacks.
