Armchair Conversation with Dina El-Tawansy, Caltrans District 4 Director

The AAAEA-CA Chapter is very proud to have the opportunity to recognize and celebrate an outstanding figure in our community, one of our own members and the first women chapter president in AAAEA’s history.

It gives us all pride to announce that Dina El-Tawansy was recently appointed as Caltrans District Director for District 4 (Bay Area). She is the first Arab American women to reach this level in Caltrans or any similar agencies.

Dina is a bright and accomplished engineer. She has over 23 years of experience with Caltrans spanning over many districts and various responsibilities. Most recently, she served as acting Director and Chief Deputy Director to Caltrans District 4 in California’s Bay Area. She also served as Deputy Director for Caltrans District 12 responsible for operation and maintenance. Her career was spent between the Bay Area and Southern California Area. She excelled in every responsibility and assignment. She exemplifies professionalism, commitment and hard work.

Dina was active in the formation of the AAAEA California Chapter and established a Northern California section. In addition, she played a major role in the formation of the national organization and served on a number of national committees.

Please join us in applauding and congratulating Dina on her success. She makes all of us honored and proud.

This email is being sent to you to let you know about a scholarship opportunity currently available from CAAP (Center for Arab American Philanthropy/a program of ACCESS). It is open to Arab American college students anywhere in the United States studying engineering.

The deadline to apply to this scholarship is August 3, 2018.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS:

It is anticipated that the Khalaf Family Scholarships will be $2,500 per student, and may be renewable for up to 4 years for students meeting satisfactory academic progress standards. The Fund will make all grant distributions directly to the student’s affiliated college or university. All colleges and universities must be accredited and be located within the United States.

AAAEA-CA concludes 2016 with a very successful gala

On Saturday November 5, 2016, the AAAEA-CA chapter held a very successful end of year and 8th anniversary gala. The evening was entertaining and fun filled with great keynote speaker, special awardees, amazing entertainment and music. Over 150 members, students, friends, and supporters attended and made the evening memorable. Over 17 companies sponsored the event and the scholarships.

The event MC was Ms. Janeen Obeid. She did a marvelous job in managing the program and keeping the crowd engaged and entertained.

The chapter president Adel Hagekhalil welcomed the attendees and stressed the goal of AAAEA to build a network of professionals to exchange knowledge and expertise and build business and career opportunities.
In addition, Adel highlighted the role of the members and sponsors in lending a helping hand to students through the scholarship program. Adel reported that AAAEA-CA is moving upward and forward with record scholarships and received record sponsorships.

Ten scholarships were presented to ten deserving students by the scholarships committee chaired by Mr. Ahmad Fakih. The committee was represented at the event by Mr. Amjad Obeid, Mr. Samir Khoury, Mr. Marc Damikolas, and Mr. Adel Hagekhalil. The scholarships awarded at the event bring the total to nearly 71 scholarship and $61,000 given to date.
Career and community achievement awards were presented to Ms. Samara Ali-Ahmad and Mr. Hassan Alameddine for their professional achievements and community engagement. Ms. Ali-Ahmad was a principal civil engineer with the City of Los Angeles and has recently retired. Mr. Alameddine is currently an assistant deputy director with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

Mr. Jim Beil, Director of Capital Programs for the Orange County Transportation Authority, was the keynote speaker. He graciously accepted our invitation and gave a very informative presentation on the future of transportation and transit in Orange County include over $5.5 Billion in capital projects including the first smart street car project.
Mr. Bilal Almasri from the national AAAEA graciously joined the gala where he was acknowledged and recognized for his hard work and the national AAAEA's efforts. The 20-year celebration video of the association was shown for the attendees.

A very entertaining magician, Johnny Wu, wowed the crowd with his wit, humor and magic. DJ Danny entertained the attendees with dance music and songs.

Many thanks go to the event committee who made the event successful. The committee included Amjad Obeid, Rick Hijazi, Ghina Yamout, Adam Chamaa, Azzam Saad, Gus Nakhoul, Janeen Obeid and Haitham Aranki.

Everyone who left the dinner gala felt energized and excited about the great work AAAEA-CA is doing and looking forward a great 2017.

On Saturday, May 14, 2016, AAAEA-CA Southern California Chapter hosted the Semi Annual Dinner Gala Event at the Grand Catered Event in the City of Orange. As always and keeping up with the old tradition it was a sold out event attended by about 125 people. Ms. Janeen Obeid was the MC kicking off the event with warm welcoming statement, reiterating what AAAEA stand for in helping out the engineers, architects and IT professionals in our community and the needs for collective participation and support from everybody. Our event’s Keynote Speaker was Mr. Michael J. Sarullo, PE from the Environmental Engineering Division in the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering.
The recipients of the AAAEA-CA Professional Achievement Award were three accomplished individuals Ms. Kay Alabed, DDS, President of AESCO, Mr. Adam Chamaa, PE, GE Vice President of AESCO, a construction materials testing and inspection service firm and Dr. Issa Nesnas, Team Leader at JPL supervising the Robotic Mobility Group that made it possible to put a Rover on Mars. Dr. Nesnas was the guest special guest speaker for the technical seminar that took place back in February 2016.
The highlight of this mid-year event was the award of 9 Scholarships to well deserving students from various California Universities totaling $7,000.
The entertainment was provided by DJ Danny and Mr. Ramy Youssef an Arab American Comedian from Hollywood California.
Special thanks go to all our event’s sponsors without their continued support and generosity over the year the scholarship program would not exist. All in all it was a successful event thanks to all our AAAEA-CA colleagues and members who worked diligently to make it happen.

Greetings,

It is with great pleasure that I announce that we have received an overwhelming number of reservations! We are so excited to see many of you at our Semi Annual Networking Dinner on May 9th. Unfortunately, we are completely sold out and we regret to inform you that we can no longer accept any more reservations. If you will not be attending this event with us, we look forward to seeing you at our future events.

For those who RSVP'd via e-mail and have not send the payment, please do so immediately to complete your reservations.

As a reminder, our program will start at 6:30 pm. However, there will be time for networking prior to the event starting at 6:00 pm. Many members of our organizations, have used this time to negotiate new partnerships, hire, and be hired - don't miss out on your chance to meet and greet with our highly distinguished attendees. Mezza (appetizers) will be served around 6:30 and dinner will be served at 7:00 pm. We ask that all attendees be prompt.
