International Self-Care Day 💚

Self-care doesn't have to be a spa day, a vacation or an expensive treat.

For someone in an abusive or recovering from an abusive relationship, self-care may simply be:
🌿 Taking a few deep breaths
💧 Drinking a glass of water
🚶 Taking a short walk
🚿 Taking a shower
💜 Reminding yourself that you are not alone and deserve to feel safe

When you're living in survival mode, even the smallest act of caring for yourself is an act of strength and a few minutes a day can be a small step towards learning what you want.

Why didn't you just leave?"

It's one of the most common questions survivors hear and one of the most harmful.

Leaving an abusive relationship is rarely a single moment. It's often a process shaped by safety, finances, children, pets, housing, emotional trauma and many other factors that are unique to each survivor.

For many, leaving can also be the most dangerous time. ⚠️ As an abusive partner loses control, the risk of violence may increase, making careful safety planning essential.

There is no "right" time to leave and no two journeys look the same.

Every survivor deserves compassion, understanding and the opportunity to make decisions about their safety *on their own terms*.

Words matter. 💜

When someone shares their experience with domestic violence, the way we respond can either create safety or make them feel more alone.

Many survivors already carry feelings of fear, shame, self-doubt and isolation. If we blame, judge or minimize their experiences, it can make it harder to seek help.

Instead of asking "Why didn't you leave?", try saying:
💬 I believe you.
💬 Everyone deserves to feel safe.
💬 You are not alone.

Listening without judgment can make a difference.

June is National PTSD Awareness Month.

For many survivors of domestic violence, the trauma doesn't end when they leave an abusive relationship. The emotional and psychological effects can continue long after the physical abuse ended impacting a person's sense of safety.

Bri's story is one example of how domestic violence can leave lasting trauma. Like many survivors, she spent years questioning whether what she experienced "counted" as abuse because there were no visible bruises.

At Su Casa, we provide emergency shelter, counseling, advocacy, and resources to help survivors and their children move from crisis to healing.
