Thank you Councilwoman Suely Saro!

Last night at City Council, we honored Cambodian Genocide Remembrance Day. It has been 51 years since the Khmer Rouge government seized control of Cambodia and carried out a series of atrocities that lasted until 1979. Each year on April 17, we remember the lives lost and to acknowledge the deep impact this history continues to have in the Cambodian community.

In Long Beach, home to the largest Cambodian population outside of Cambodia, these stories live within our neighborhoods, our families, and our shared community. This day is about holding space for reflection, honoring resilience, and recognizing the strength of those who continue to carry these histories forward and heal.

We look forward to the completion of the Killing Fields Memorial Garden, which will provide a dedicated place for remembrance, reflection, and healing for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who shared your testimonies. Your presence and stories are so important.
