On behalf of the Riverpark Coalition and Los Angeles Waterkeeper, I am pleased to share a major update regarding environmental justice and public open space in Western Long Beach.
Following a yearlong legal dispute, the Riverpark Coalition (RPC) and Los Angeles Waterkeeper have reached a landmark settlement agreement with the owner of the property at 3701 Pacific Place. This agreement resolves a California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) lawsuit concerning the Pacific Place Projectโa self-storage and RV parking facility adjacent to the Los Angeles River.
Rather than continuing a protracted legal battle, this settlement represents a collaborative turning point that will actively improve the Long Beach riverfront. Key outcomes of the settlement include:
โข Expanding Public Open Space: The property owner will partner with RPC and LA Waterkeeper to advance the future development of publicly accessible open space on the adjacent Los Angeles County Flood Control parcel, offering critical green space to a community historically burdened by park inequities.
โข Improving Trail Connectivity: The agreement dedicates a 15-foot-wide public trail easement on the north side of the project site, creating a safer, improved public access point from Pacific Place street to the LA River, the LARIO path, and local equestrian trails.
โข Reducing Environmental Impact: The project site will see design improvements, including an increased green buffer area, ensuring the development contributes to the overall health of the watershed.
The full press release is included for your review. This cooperation serves as a โgamechangerโ for local residents and a model for community-forward development.
