Created by renters, this is a space to connect with neighbors, build community, and organize for a stronger Long Beach!

In Long Beach, “substantial remodel” evictions are a legal basis that allow landlords to remove tenants from their home when they make major renovations to a unit.

However, in many cases substantial remodel requirements are not properly followed. In Vicky’s case, her landlord filed an illegal substantial remodel eviction after failing to submit proper permits and paperwork. They also neglected her health and safety by keeping her in the unit while hazardous chemicals were present in the air.

Across the city, landlords have used substantial remodel to remove families, increase rents, without making major renovations. This is why the Long Beach Housing Justice Coalition is calling for the removal of substantial remodel as a reason for eviction.

Families should to able to remain rooted in their homes and benefit from the necessary repairs and improvements to their unit, without being displaced in the process.

Election Day is around the corner! 🗳

Join us this Saturday, October 10 as we connect with Long Beach residents to share information about two statewide measures that could impact housing and local services:

✅ Yes on Prop 1: Invests into affordable housing programs, expands homeownership opportunities, and support residents at risk of homelessness
❌ No on Prop 43: Would raise the voting threshold, making it harder for communities to approve future local tax initiatives

Long Beach’s Just Cause protections are falling behind neighboring cities that have taken steps to keep renters housed and prevent displacement 🏡

Residents are now calling on the City to strengthen tenant protections and close the loopholes that leave renters vulnerable to unjust evictions.

Budget season has officially come to a close.

The Our Budget, Our Future Coalition’s mission is rooted in the belief that our city budget must reflect the needs of its community.

During a challenging budget year, our community came together to keep residents’ livelihoods at the center of the conversation. Although not all of our community’s demands were met, we had some wins, and our work won’t stop here.

We are committed to building community power and developing leaders that are ready to advocate for a safe and stable Long Beach for all residents. ✊🏽
