๐ŸŽ Black Equestrian Legacies: In the twentieth century, communities in California sustained their cowboy culture and history in ways both old and new. Black rural migrants carried their love of ranching and horses with them as they moved to California during the Great Migration, a mass exodus of six million African Americans from the South to cities in the North and West from 1910 to 1970.

These individuals sought social and economic opportunities for themselves and their children away from the racism and terrorism of the Ku Klux Klan and segregationist Jim Crow laws.

During the twentieth century, many of these migrants and their families also became part of the urban Black communities of California. They established a Black middle class, creating businesses and building social, civic, and economic networks.

But their connection with the land and their horsemanship skills remained. Today, Oakland and Los Angeles celebrate their contemporary Black cowboy legacy built on agriculture and ranching.

Bose Ikard (1843-1929)
Trailblazer of the Chisholm Trail

Bose Ikard was born into slavery in 1843 in Mississippi. After the Civil War, he gained his freedom and headed west, where he became one of the most respected African American cowboys of the cattle-drive era.

Ikard found work with legendary cattleman Charles Goodnight, cofounder of the famous Goodnight-Loving Trail, one of the most important cattle routes in the American West. Serving as Goodnight's trusted trail driver, bookkeeper, and banker, Ikard was responsible not only for moving thousands of cattle across Texas and the Great Plains but also for safeguarding the outfit's money and supplies. Goodnight often remarked that Ikard's honesty, intelligence, and dependability were beyond question.

During countless cattle drives, Ikard demonstrated exceptional horsemanship, courage, and leadership while helping guide herds through dangerous river crossings, harsh weather, and conflicts on the open range. His calm judgment and unwavering reliability earned him the respect of fellow cowboys and ranch owners alike.
