Take note!
Beware of Facebook Scam
The Lone Tree Police Department would like to provide information about a Facebook scam involving the selling of items. The scammers portray themselves as one of your “friends” on Facebook, but the account has been hacked. The post looks like an authentic post from your friend advertising they need to sell a list of household items from their parents’ home so they can place their parent in assisted living and pay for their care.
They include photos of each item and request a deposit to hold each item; many of the items are being sold at bargain prices. When a potential victim shows interest in purchasing an item and sends a message to the scammer (who is posing as your friend), they are told to make a purchase they must use a cash app and make a deposit to “hold” the item.
This is a scam! Once money is sent through the cash app, the scam is complete. Here are few suggestions on how to spot a scammer:
• Purchasing online? Make every effort to examine the item in person before purchasing.
• Never give out any personal information such as social security number, email address, bank account, or credit card number.
• Check with the person posting the information if they are selling items and have not had their account hacked.
• A possible online scam seller only accepts wire transfers or other non-reversible payments.
• Possible scam sellers don’t or won’t meet in person.
• Scammers usually ask for a deposit or pre-payment.
If you think you have been a victim of a scam, please call the Police Department at 303-799-0533 or stop by the Police Department to report the crime.
