📢 Calling all hummingbirds!

😎There’s no missing this gorgeous scarlet wildflower! While working at one of our Scenic River properties along Little Darby Creek, our Natural Resources Technician Cece spotted a stunning patch of cardinal flower in peak bloom! 😍

🌸Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) can grow several feet tall and is recognizable by its brilliant red flowers. 🔎Look closely and you'll see each bloom has three downward-facing petals and two upward-facing petals forming a tube-like base.

🌸Its unique design is perfectly adapted for hummingbirds! Their long bills allow them to reach deep into the flower, making these tiny birds the primary pollinators for the cardinal flower. ☺️ It's a wonderful example of how Ohio's native plants and wildlife evolved to work together! 🐦

🌼Summer may be winding down but Ohio’s wildflowers will continue to brighten the landscape into 🍂 early autumn! 🧐Learn more at naturalareas.ohiodnr.gov
