Happy 156th Anniversary Maple Street Chapel!
Today we celebrate 156 years of history, community, and preservation.
Dedicated on May 29, 1870, the Maple Street Chapel has been a cherished landmark in Lombard for generations. Its story began much earlier, in 1851, when nine members gathered in a village schoolhouse to organize what would eventually become First Church of Lombard.
Over the years, the Chapel has played many roles in our community. The bell in the steeple once called worshippers to service and alerted residents to fires. It has served as a gathering place for worship, education, community events, weddings, concerts, funerals, and even silent movies.
When the current First Church of Lombard UCC building was built in 1958. Maple Street Chapel entered a new chapter. Today, thanks to the dedication of supporters, volunteers, and members of the Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society, this historic treasure continues to stand as a symbol of Lombard's rich heritage.
In 1978, the Maple Street Chapel was added to the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring its legacy would continue for future generations.
