Family was never meant to be one-directional.

Pam Parish once believed her role was to arrive healed, have all the answers and remain strong enough for her daughters to lean on. But real family required something different.

It meant stepping into the mess alongside them—not cleaning it up beforehand or trying to solve everything from a safe distance. It meant feeling, weeping, being honest and allowing herself to be just as human and unfinished as they were.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer isn’t having all the answers. It’s being willing to stay in the mess together.

Our children don’t need us to be without wounds of our own. They need us to allow our wounds to make us more compassionate toward theirs—not less.

In the daily grind of parenting, it can be easy to focus on the behaviors, the phone calls from school and the routines that keep falling apart. But behind those difficult moments are stories of pain and loss—and sometimes our own unhealed places, too.

Every time Pam Parish found her way back to compassion instead of correction, healing followed, relationships grew and honest conversations became possible.

Family doesn’t have an expiration date.

It doesn’t end when a young person turns 18 or when the state is no longer involved. Yet far too many young adults cross that birthday without anyone standing beside them.

For Pam Parish, Connections Homes and Don’t Go Alone were not born in a strategy meeting or from a five-year plan. They grew from seven years of showing up for her own daughters—and realizing that what she learned inside her home could not remain there.

Once you see what it means for a young person to face adulthood without family, you cannot pretend it isn’t happening everywhere.
