AS WE OBSERVE DEPRESSION AWARENESS MONTH, LET'S REMEMBER:
Depression doesn't always look like sadness.
Sometimes, the signs are hidden in plain sight.
THIS IS WHAT DEPRESSION CAN LOOK LIKE:
1. Smiling while struggling
They may laugh, make jokes and appear happy, while privately dealing with emotional pain.
2. Sleeping all the time
They may spend much of the day sleeping because getting through the day feels exhausting.
3. Losing interest in things they once loved
Activities, hobbies and people they once enjoyed may no longer bring the same excitement.
4. Always feeling tired
Even after sleeping, they may still feel physically and emotionally drained.
5. Pulling away from people
They may stop answering calls, responding to messages or spending time with people they care about.
6. Struggling with simple tasks
Getting out of bed, bathing, cooking or completing everyday responsibilities may suddenly feel overwhelming.
7. Finding it difficult to concentrate
They may struggle to focus, remember things or make decisions they normally would make easily.
8. Losing motivation
Things they once cared about may begin to feel pointless or too difficult to start.
9. Becoming unusually quiet
Someone who was once talkative may become withdrawn and spend more time alone.
10. Becoming easily irritated
Depression can sometimes show up as frustration, anger or being overwhelmed by things that normally wouldn't bother them.
11. Changes in appetite
They may eat much less than usual, eat more than usual or lose interest in food altogether.
12. Neglecting personal care
Things like bathing, dressing, cleaning or taking care of themselves may start to feel like difficult tasks.
13. Feeling emotionally numb
They may not necessarily feel sad. Sometimes they simply feel empty, disconnected or unable to feel much of anything.
14. Saying “I'm fine”
They may say they are okay because they don't know how to explain what they are experiencing or don't want to worry anyone.
15. Avoiding messages and calls
Even responding to someone they love can feel like a task they don't have the energy to handle.
16. Constantly blaming themselves
They may believe they are failing others, causing problems or simply not being good enough.
17. Feeling like a burden
They may begin to believe that the people around them would be better off without their problems.
18. Losing hope about the future
The future may feel empty, uncertain or difficult to imagine in a positive way.
19. Being there for everyone else
Sometimes, the person supporting everyone around them is the same person quietly struggling when they are alone.
20. Looking completely okay
One of the most difficult things about depression is that someone can look perfectly fine on the outside while struggling deeply within.
Let's look out for one another.
