Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation

Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation The Museum serves as the Foundation's headquarters in Somaliland.

The Somaliland biodiversity foundation is dedicated to building educational and research opportunities in Somaliland for studying biodiversity and promoting conservation. The Foundation is developing a Biodiversity Museum and an educational program at the University of Hargeisa in Somaliland (which the UN considers part of Somalia although it has functioned independently since 1991). We are develo

ping online resources, in conjunction with Somalilanders,to make information about the country's biodiversity more available, to promote understanding of the interplay among species, and encourage conservation and restoration of its biological heritage in ways that promote its people's well-being.

Every journey starts with the first step. We are very glad to have reached a milestone of over 1,000 plant specimens, collected from the beginning of our work up to last week’s field trip.

Subject to the availability of funding, we aim to build a collection of hundreds of thousands of specimens in the future so that we can document not only species occurrence records but also their distribution across the different ecosystems of Somaliland.

Cheers!

Congratulations to Sanaag University and its partners on this project!

The Insect Pinning and Preservation Workshop for the Entomology course students of the College of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and Environment has taken place this week at the biodiversity teaching lab of the University of Hargeisa. The workshop was facilitated by course lecturer Mustafe Abdulkadir and assisted by Hadia, a recent graduate and former beneficiary of previous entomology workshops.

These activities allow students to learn properly for the detailed study of insects, identification and the long-term documentation of the unique insect population for entomology education, scientific research and biodiversity conservation.

The Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation has successfully completed a two-week Herbarium Training Program. Participants from two universities—Amoud University and Burao University—received comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in plant collection, preservation, identification, and herbarium specimen management, deepening their understanding of botanical research and biodiversity documentation. SBF also provided the two universities with the necessary tools and equipment to establish centers for biodiversity collection and documentation.

The Somaliland Biodiversity Foundation (SBF), in collaboration with the University of Hargeisa – College of Agriculture, Veterinary and Environment, held a hands-on training on arthropod collection and digital biodiversity documentation, focusing on insects and arachnids.

Participants strengthened their skills in collecting, identifying, and preserving specimens, while learning the ecological importance of arthropods in agriculture, environmental balance, and climate studies. They were also trained in modern data management—recording and uploading specimen information to platforms such as OpenZooMuseum and iNaturalist, and using geo-referencing tools for accurate mapping.

Through this initiative, SBF and the University of Hargeisa continue to empower students and researchers to contribute to global biodiversity databases and promote the conservation of Somaliland’s unique ecosystems.

Bushaaro culus:

1939-kii, Philip Earle Glover wuxu ahaa madaxii ugu sarreeyey ee xafiiska daaqa ee Soomaalilaand. Isaga oo dhiirrigelin ka heleya Cabdillaahi Aar, oo ahaa turjumaan sare oo ka tirsan xafiiska Beeraha iyo Cilmiga Xoolaha, Glover wuxu ururiyey liis ku saabsan magacyada Soomaaliga ah ee dhirta oo uu dhinac waday magacyadooda cilmiga ah. Liiskaas waxa la daabacay 1947-kii.

Haddaba 2022, Helen Pickering ayaa bilawday dib-u-habaynta liiskii Glover, iyada oo ku ladhay magacyada Soomaaliga ah ee ku qoran buugga Flora of Somalia (ee 4-ta Majalladood), isla markaana adeegsanaysa degelka magacyada sayniska ee 'Plants of the World Online (ee May 2024). Haddeer nuskhadda Glover ee ay Helen dib-u-habaysay oo ay u bixisay ciwaanka ah "Linking Local and Scientific Knowledge/ Isku xidhka aqoonta maxalliga ah iyo ta cilmiga ah ee dhirta" ayey baahisay July 2025.

In 1947, Glover compiled a checklist of Somali plant names alongside their scientific equivalents. In 2025, Helen Pickering published an updated and bilingual version of Glover’s checklist.
