With elections coming up, it is a good time to employ our 5th principle and discuss voting rights and representative democracy in the United States. We will briefly discuss how churches in colonial America influenced the development of democracy, and the history of the bumpy road towards voting rights for most Americans. We will conclude with a review of voting processes for the Fall 2028 election. We will not discuss or endorse any specific candidates or propositions - we will focus on the election process in Utah.

Susanne has recently encountered examples of misleading and dishonest communication from public officials and lawmakers. On Sunday, September 27, we’ll look at some of the ways misrepresentation can be difficult to recognize and discuss how we can become more critical listeners.

We’ll explore a few common tactics, including projection, when someone accuses others of behavior they themselves may be engaging in; cherry-picking, when selected facts are used to create a misleading impression; half-truths, which leave out important context; and whataboutism, which shifts attention away from the issue being discussed.

Words have power. Join us as we learn to recognize some of the more subtle ways messages can mislead, distort, or distract.

Join us for CVUU’s annual Water Communion! You’re invited to bring a small amount of water from a place or moment that holds meaning for you—a favorite spot in nature, your family home, a special trip, or even the first rain after a long dry spell.

During the service, these waters will be poured together into a single bowl, symbolizing how our diverse experiences and sources of inspiration flow into one shared faith.

The Water Communion is also a beautiful expression of our UU Value of Interdependence, reminding us that we are connected to one another, to the Earth, and to the greater web of life.
