"From Shoebox to Showcase: Organizing and Preserving a Personal Archive at Home" presented by Sarah Berry & Braydon Wright, USU Special Collections & Archives. Whether they are tucked away in shoeboxes, filing cabinets or on hard drives, our family treasures deserve better than to be tucked away, lost or forgotten. In this brief workshop, two employees of USU's Special Collections and Archives will outline simple and practical ways to start organizing, preserving, and sharing personal archives at home. The material in home archives range across a wide variety of mediums such as journals, letters, scrapbooks, photos, digital media and more. We will be discussing how archivists consider memory, consolidation, significance, and long-term care for their cherished memories in their own lives. We hope you'll walk away from this personal archiving workshop with some simple and effective tools to implement with your own material at home.

📆 "Utah Family and Material Culture of WII" on Wednesday, November 12 from 7-8 p.m. at the Logan Library, hosted in partnership with the Cache Valley Historical Society.

How have everyday objects and cherished family memories become our most powerful link to Utah's World War II experience? This interactive lecture, featuring object stories from the "Bringing War Home" project archive, goes beyond textbooks to show how personal artifacts can act as time capsules. We’ll explore how these tangible items, paired with the stories passed down through generations, shape our understanding of how ordinary Utahns faced extraordinary challenges. Join us to see how memory is preserved, not just in history books, but in the things we hold most dear.

Hear from Molly Cannon, Assistant Professor in Anthropology and Executive Director and Curator for the Museum of Anthropology. She shares her research through public programming and exhibits with USU and Cache Valley communities.

Our next lecture is on Wednesday, October 8, at 7pm at the Logan Library (285 N Main)!

“From Black to White: The Racial Passage of the Enoch and Mary Jordi Able Children” will be presented by W. Paul Reeve. The 1900 United States census for Cache County, Utah, listed a total of ten Black people in the entire county. Nine lived in Logan, one in Richmond, and eight belonged to the same household, that of Enoch and Mary Jordi Able. This presentation will explore the racial passage of the Enoch Able family, from “Black” in the 1900 census, to “mulatto” in 1910, to “white” by 1920. Enoch died in 1901, leaving his white, French-speaking, Swiss-born-wife a widow with seven children to raise. The Logan Journal newspaper announced his death in 1901 and then noted that “Able left a wife and large family in destitute circumstances.” The family’s difficulties navigating those circumstances will form the backbone of Professor Reeve’s presentation. The story that emerges represents the challenges of being of mixed racial ancestry in the Jim Crow era of racial segregation in the United States.
