A huge thank you to the Utah Assistive Technology Program (UATP) for providing valuable training to our AmeriCorps Seniors Volunteers!

Through their expertise, our volunteers gained greater insight into assistive technology resources that can help the clients they serve maintain independence, improve daily living, and thrive in their communities.

There’s a new tool to help older adults in Utah stay ahead of legal risks.

The Utah Legal Risk Detector is a free, easy-to-use tool designed for adults aged 60+ to identify potential legal issues before they become major problems.

The Utah Legal Risk Detector can help you:
• Figure out if you have a legal issue you need to take action on
• Find resources
• Connect with a local legal service that may be able to help you

This tool is meant for any person 60 or older who is concerned with legal risk in areas such as:
• Physical abuse or neglect
• Financial abuse or scams
• Housing/homeownership issues
• Debt collection
• Health insurance issues

When Debbie Kelley returned to Utah, she knew she wanted to work with older adults again. She found her place as a Senior Companion with AmeriCorps Seniors, and says it has given her “a family and friends.”

From driving clients to appointments to simply listening to their stories, Debbie has built real friendships. “It has given me people I trust and talk to, and gets me out of my apartment. I enjoy this program a lot.”

If you’re 55+ and want to make a difference like Debbie, you can serve as a Senior Companion. Volunteers receive a small, tax-free stipend that does not affect Social Security or disability benefits.

Stay safe this Valentine’s Day! Romance scams can target people by creating a fake online profile to trick someone into giving them money. Older adults who are lonely or isolated can be at high risk of falling for these scams.

If you know someone who might be at risk, here are some tips you can share:
❤︎ Don’t give out personal information to people you don’t know well.
❤︎ If someone asks for money, it’s a scam! Never send money to someone you have not met.
❤︎ Connect with people in your own community through activities at your local senior center. You can search senior centers by location at daas.utah.gov/locations/
You can report romance scams to the FBI at ic3.gov.

Is winter feeling a little too long? Purpose can make it brighter! Senior Companions spend time supporting older adults who need help staying independent—offering friendship, encouragement, and practical support one visit, one conversation, and one moment at a time. Volunteer 15+ hours per week close to home.

Volunteers receive a small, tax-free stipend that won’t impact SSI or other benefits. We provide all the training and ongoing support you need to make a difference.

Volunteers must meet income eligibility requirements (at or below $2,608/month for one person or $3,525/month for a two-person household; can deduct medical expenses).
