Bergen County residents and environmental advocates are urging the County to permanently stop the proposed 500-foot industrial communications tower in the Ramapo Valley Reservation. This protected Wilderness Area is public parkland preserved in perpetuity under the Highlands Act and Green Acres Law. While the Bergen County Board of Commissioners has opposed the project, we are calling for all remaining agreements—including the Memorandum of Understanding with McCay Brothers—to be fully rescinded to ensure lasting protection of this irreplaceable natural and historic resource for now and future generations.

Important Meeting: Tell the Bergen County Commissioners to Stop the 500-Foot Tower in the Ramapo Reservation

Attend the Wednesday, January 21 Meeting

7:00 PM

One Bergen Plaza, Hackensack

We have been making progress, but Bergen County could still approve this 500-foot tower at any time. We must keep the public pressure on the Bergen County Commissioners to uphold the Public Trust and say NO to this mega tower. The Commissioners need to keep hearing from us to stop the Wall Street Tower.

This tower would be one of the worst betrayals of the public trust in Bergen County’s history. County officials are advancing a plan to construct a 500-foot private communications tower in the heart of the Ramapo Reservation—a park preserved with taxpayer dollars and protected under the Public Trust Doctrine.

This is not about improving cell service or emergency communications. That claim is simply false. The tower would serve one purpose: to give McKay Brothers, a private high-frequency trading firm, a faster route to move stock-trading data between Wall Street and Canada. The goal is to shave microseconds off financial trades—benefiting speculators, not the public.

There have been no environmental assessments, no Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), no endangered species surveys, no migratory bird impact analysis, no technical analysis, and no financial assessment. There has been no review of stormwater runoff, forest fragmentation, or impacts to cultural and historic sites, including Ramapough homeland areas. This is the wrong project in the wrong place.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We need your help to stop a massive 500-foot tower from being built in the middle of the Ramapo Reservation.

This destructive project would industrialize our parkland and hand it over to Wall Street speculators—betraying the public trust and threatening one of Bergen County’s most beloved natural treasures

Bergen County Commissioners Meeting
Wednesday, December 17 – 4:30 pm
📍 One Bergen County Plaza, 5th Floor, Hackensack, NJ
Please attend and speak out to Save the Ramapo Mountains!

💥 What’s Happening
Bergen County is partnering with McKay Brothers, a private financial communications company, to build a 500-foot industrial tower on a ridge in the middle of the Reservation.

Bergen County Declared this a Wilderness Area in 1972 .It is protected Green Acres parkland within the Highlands Preservation Area.

The tower is not for cell phones or emergency services—it’s for high-speed stock trading between Wall Street, Chicago, and Canada.

This project is about greed, not need.

❗ Why This Matters
The County says it will do “due diligence,” but the Memorandum of Understanding between the County and McKay Brothers focuses only on approvals and permits—not on environmental review or public input.
There’s no mention of:
Environmental assessments or endangered species surveys
Impacts to birds in a major migratory flyway
Stormwater runoff or forest fragmentation
Cultural and historic sites, including Ramapough homeland areas
For decades, taxpayers have spent tens of millions of dollars to preserve the Ramapo Mountains for future generations.
Now, the County wants to sell out the public to Wall Street interests.

⚠️ The Tower Would:
Scar the mountain views and destroy the park experience
Endanger wildlife and migratory birds
Pollute streams and damage fragile ecosystems
Fragment forest habitat and block public access
Threaten historic and Native cultural sites
Undermine decades of preservation work

🚫 If This Project Moves Forward:
More parks and open spaces could be privatized and industrialized
Wildlife and forest habitats will be lost
Developers will exploit loopholes to bypass Highlands Act and Green Acres protections

✊ Take Action
Join us to tell the Bergen County Commissioners: NO Wall Street Tower in the Ramapos!

For more than 40 years, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) prioritized drilling, mining, and other resource extraction across almost 250 million acres of our national public lands. Thanks to thousands of action takers like you, in 2024 the agency finalized the “Public Lands Rule” to make clear that conservation - access to nature, protection of cultural resources, wildlife habitat, and action on climate change - is an essential use too.

But now, the Trump Administration is threatening to eliminate this important rule -- all so they can hand over more of our public lands to corporate polluters. We only have until November 10 to make our voices heard to stop this giveaway!
