This morning at West Stanly Rotary, Fran had the honor of presenting Pam with her Wheelchair Foundation Award. Each year, our club purchases a wheelchair in honor of a retiring club president. Thanks to Pam’s leadership and service this past year, a young man here in the United States is now enjoying greater independence in his new set of “Hot Wheels.” What a meaningful way to celebrate a year of service!

Our guest speaker was Kimberly Blackwelder with the Stanly County Board of Elections. Kimberly shared important information about the upcoming election:

🗳️ Election Day: November 3
🗳️ Early Voting Begins: October 15
📍 Voting Location in Locust: Locust City Hall

Kimberly is also recruiting paid election officials! Opportunities include:
• Election Day officials (6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.)
• Early Voting officials (7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. or 1:45 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
• High school students (must be enrolled in school and at least 17 years old)

This morning, Keith introduced his granddaughter, Nora Chacon-Harvey, who shared her Girl Scout Troop 5315 service project, “Hygiene for the Homeless.”

Nora and her troop are working to assemble 150 hygiene kits filled with essentials like toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, and other personal care items for homeless children in the Charlotte area.

Our club has the opportunity to help! The troop’s collection day is August 8, so you have TWO weeks to donate. Please bring your contributions to Emricci’s next week or to our August 6 Rotary meeting, and Keith will make sure they are delivered.

The West Stanly Rotary Club is proud to support this outstanding community service project with a $100 donation.

📚💙 Rotarians Giving Back! 💙📚

Today, West Stanly Rotarians Ethan Edwards and Steve Sycuro helped deliver school supplies to the Back to School Bash at The Brew Room supporting local students as they prepare for a successful school year.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated supplies and to the organizers of this wonderful community event. Working together, we can help ensure every child starts the school year with the tools they need to succeed.

Fran’s guest this morning was Professor John Reid from Pfeiffer University’s Justice and Professional Studies Department.

Professor Reid gave us a great overview of Pfeiffer University, sharing that the school has nearly 900 students, a 12-to-1 student-faculty ratio, and that 95% of students receive financial aid. He talked about Pfeiffer’s strong focus on faculty mentoring, service learning, community involvement, and preparing students for successful careers through internships and hands-on experiences.

He also walked us through the Justice and Professional Studies degree program, explaining that it requires 120 semester hours. Good news for community college graduates—students who have earned an associate degree can typically transfer in 60 credit hours toward that bachelor’s degree.
