What a wonderful afternoon we enjoyed celebrating our incredible volunteers! On Wednesday, April 15, the Clubhouse Oak Room was the venue for our annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with delicious treats, refreshing beverages, and even better conversation as we gathered to honor the heart and soul of our organization—our volunteers!

We were pleased to welcome Delegate Phil Scott, who joined our celebration to present a House Joint Resolution commending LOWLINC for a decade of dedicated service. His inspiring words of gratitude and encouragement truly resonated, making our volunteers feel deeply appreciated for the vital impact they've made over the last 10 years.

The fun highlight of the event was a spirited trivia contest that put everyone’s knowledge to the test. It was an eye-opening way to showcase the truly amazing variety of services our volunteers provide every single day.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us - and to all our volunteers for everything you do to ensure our older neighbors can live independently and safely in their homes.

It is with heavy hearts that we share some very sad news regarding one of our own. Recently, Jane, our wonderful Member Services Coordinator, experienced the sudden and tragic loss of her daughter, Tiffany.

Jane and her family have asked for privacy at this time as they cope with this loss. However, some have asked how we can support the family. A GoFundMe has been established by Tiffany’s friends to help ease the financial burden of funeral costs and support Tiffany’s family as they navigate this profound loss. To contribute or share the link, please visit: https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-tiffany-sambor-support-for-her-family.

Jeanne and Ashley are LOWLINC points of contact while Jane is away. Please keep Jane and her loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

Our March 5 Speaker Series program entitled “Would You Like Some Science With That?” will have you examining your next meal in a whole new way!

Kelli Slunt, Professor of Chemistry at UMW, will be our guest speaker explaining the science behind the sensations of taste and smell and how they impact how we experience flavor. Using provided food samples, participants will discover for themselves why unique, unexpected pairings, such as white chocolate and caviar, taste good together. This will be a fun, interactive presentation held at the LOW Community Center from 1:30-3:00pm on March 5.

Register online at lowlinc.org or by calling LOWLINC at 855-569-5462.

Dr. Slunt teaches biochemistry and organic chemistry at UMW, and has taught “Culinary Chemistry” to students during the UMW Summer Enrichment Program.
This program is open to the community.

Did you know that unintentional falls are a leading cause of injury and injury-related death among adults aged 65 and older in the United States? But we’re happy to report that there are ways to improve your confidence at home and when you're out by learning to control fall risks.

LOWLINC is hosting an 8-week fall prevention program called “Matter of Balance” on consecutive Fridays starting Friday, March 6 from 12:00-2:30pm and ending April 24. The program will be held at the Living Water Outreach Center located in the Route 20 shopping center at 32345 Constitution Hwy, Suite P. This is a free program held in partnership with Encompass Community Supports and open to the community. Registration is required. A light lunch is provided at each session. LOWLINC members may request a ride, if needed, as part of the registration process.

Register online at lowlinc.org or by calling LOWLINC at 855-569-5462.

During the first two sessions, participants will engage in learning how to reduce the risk of falls through interactive presentations. During the next 6 weeks, participants will participate in gentle exercises to increase muscle strength and joint flexibility, either standing or seated. Join this valuable program.

Rehearsals on Tuesdays - Join us!

Singing is good for you! Singing boosts your emotional and physical health, it reduces social isolation, and it’s also just plain fun! Join us in 15 weeks of singing under the direction of Becky Stewart, professional musician and music educator, as we learn a repertoire of Broadway tunes - and then perform in concert for our friends and family. There are no auditions and no previous choral singing experience is required. We meet on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:30pm at the Lake of the Woods Church.

Our partner, Encore Creativity for Older Adults, is the largest choral singing organization in the country for those over 55. Encore also offers summer singing camps in wonderful locations, international travel with performance opportunities, and online education. We’re very pleased to be able to offer this program for a reduced fee this Spring through a special grant. The $90 fee includes all rehearsals with a professional conductor, all sheet music, rehearsal tracks so you can practice at home, and a finale concert at the end of the semester.

A few of the Broadway favorites we’ll be singing this Spring are, “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “Let it Go.”

It’s not too late to join, and the program permits singers from outside Lake of the Woods. Register by calling Encore at 301-261-5747 or sending an email to [email protected]. You may also call LOWLINC at 855.569.5462.

🎭 Sing this Spring with Encore Broadway and LOWLINC! 🎶
Join us for rehearsals on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:30pm from Jan 27 to May 12 at LOW Church. There are no auditions, just lots of learning together, laughter, and friendship!

Participation is open to the community for those age 55+. The fee for all sheet music, 15 weeks of rehearsals, direction under a professional conductor, and a finale concert is just $90 thanks to a special grant program this Spring. Stipends/scholarships are available to cover all or part of the cost - we don't want the fee to be a barrier.

Some of the songs we'll sing include: Oh What a Beautiful Morning - Oklahoma; Don’t Rain on My Parade - Funny Girl; Tomorrow - Annie; It’s Raining on Prom Night - Grease; Come Rain or Come Shine - St Louis Woman; and Let it Go - Frozen. Our conductor, Becky Stewart, a professional musician and music-educator, will guide us through rehearsals - she makes it fun!

Gina Davies and her LOWLINC Social Activities Team “elves” outdid themselves preparing for the annual LOWLINC Holiday Dinner held at the Clubhouse on December 10th. Members, volunteers, and friends enjoyed a lovely dinner complemented by a fun holiday trivia game, photos in front of the Christmas tree, and outstanding carol singing led by two of our favorite LOW Players, Steve McCluskey and Elena Pratt. A very energetic version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” capped off the evening. Many thanks to all who contributed to the success of the event!

“Imagine!” After 15 weeks of learning and rehearsal, our Encore LOWLINC Broadway singers achieved their “Impossible Dream” - a concert in front of a full house at the LOW Church. The repertoire included songs from shows spanning close to 100 years of Broadway. From “Waitin’ for the Light to Shine” to “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In” to “Defying Gravity,” everyone left the concert humming their favorite tune.
Many thanks to the LOW Pick-N-Sing group who were invited to share the stage for a Christmas carol sing-along at intermission. It was truly a “Grand Night for Singing” and we congratulate our singers and Encore Conductor Becky Stewart, and thank all those who came out to enjoy the concert.
Our new season of singing starts at the end of January. Anyone who loves to sing (and is aged 55+) is welcome to join us. Watch our website for details to come! www.LOWLINC.org
