Lockwood Community Center The Community Center for Lockwood and surrounding communities, and also houses our Thrift Store (open every Sunday and Monday, 10am-4pm).

How the San Antonio Valley Community Center (also known as Lockwood Community Center) came to be…

The San Antonio Union School District was first formed in 1860. Fifty-one students were registered in the district. It is believed that the San Antonio School’s original heritage leads back to the “Indian School”, which was located along the San Antonio River. In 1917 the Weferling family of Lockwood

donated 4½ acres of land on the corner of Lockwood/Jolon and Lockwood/San Lucas Roads to the School District. The San Antonio Union School structure was completed in 1921 and still stands to this day. Additional rooms, bus barn, tennis court and two duplex apartments were built on the site in later years. The apartments housed the school teachers. In 1974 the new San Antonio Union School was built and the old structure was abandoned. The San Antonio School District was forced to dispose of their surplus property by the State. In February of 1984, the San Antonio Community Betterment Association, Inc. (SACBA) was formed by local residents as a vehicle to be ready to take title of four and one-half (4½) acre surplus site of the old San Antonio Union School when it became ready. In July 1984, SACBA received Articles of Incorporation from the State of California as a non-profit corporation, whose specific purpose was to develop a recreational center for the community. SACBA purchased the 4½ acre property for $73,000 in July 1986, and in January 1988, a grant was received from the Harden Foundation in Salinas for $50,000 to aide in the restoration of the old school house. Three more substantial grants were obtained from the Harden Foundation over the next several months as well as generous local donations, allowing for the completion of what we now know as our San Antonio Valley Community Center. The total cost of the restoration was approximately $245,000. We have dedicated our website to the memory of Anita Longmire whose dedication and tireless perseverance was instrumental in creating the Community Center that we all enjoy today. She was the driving force behind the formation of SACBA and the renovation of the old San Antonio School. Anita, we all thank you!

Jacob, a young man from Indiana, designed an American flag for a school art project. Creating the flag he used 4,466 army men painted red, white and blue; working more than 52 hours on his project that respects and honors the men and women who serve America in the Military. Sure hope the teacher gave him an A+++ for an outstanding job!

COMMUNITY MEETING regarding the placement of Mr. Rubio in our community.

I received a call from Russell Wellong this morning. It appears Mr. Rubio may have arrived here last night or this morning and now lives amongst us. Russ and Barbara have many concerns, as we all do, and would like to see how many others in our community are willing to fight for our safety and figure out how to proceed from this point on.

Our community has been shaken by this blatant disregard for our safety. Our voices have obviously not been heard.

The community needs to come together to continue to combat this. It is not over if our community says it is not over. If we become complacent it will continue to happen.

Please come to this community meeting to put our heads together to figure out where we go from here.

Just because this has happened does not mean this community should give up the fight to prevent it from happening again and again and again.

Please put any differences aside, political, religious, or otherwise, and let us come together as a community to fight for our safe and peaceful way of life here. No one, regardless of political or religious affiliation wants this in our community. None of us should ever have to feel unsafe in our own homes.

Please attend this meeting.

What the hell is wrong with people? This happened at the community center. Whoever you are, you should be ashamed of yourself. You destroyed a door for absolutely nothing. Reviewing cameras now.

Does this car belong to someone local? If so, do you plan on coming to get it?

PRODUCE EXCHANGE...

Please feel free to join in on the produce exchange tomorrow (Thursday) at the San Antonio Valley Community Center in Lockwood from 5:00-7:00pm.

Our goal is to provide a place for our community to obtain healthy home-grown fruits and vegetables and to support our local gardeners.

It is required that you follow a few simple rules in order to give us all a chance at providing this service to our community. If we do not follow these rules, then the produce exchange will most likely come to an end as soon as it begins.

Monterey County is asking that we all wear masks and social distance, and those are guidelines that we, as Board of Directors representing our Community Center intend to comply with for the safety of everyone. If you do not agree with this then please do not participate. Whether you believe we are right or wrong, please know that we have our community’s best interest at heart.

If you have a table with produce.

1. Set up your table(s) at least 10-12 feet from someone else’s table(s).
2. Wear a mask. Two hours is not that long to comply. If you don’t want to wear a mask then please do not set up a table.
3. Gloves should be worn when serving people.
4. Do not “bunch up” with others which could be seen as “a gathering”.

If you are not setting up a table and are just coming for produce, please wear a mask and social distance. Give the person next to you plenty of room. You can also wait in your car until the person in front of you has had time to leave. There should be no issue with wearing a mask since you will most likely only be there for 10 or 15 minutes at the most. Please, no “hanging out” and socializing.

The Community Center building is completely off-limits. It is closed to the public, which INCLUDES the bathrooms, in compliance with Monterey County guidelines during COVID-19.

Please do your part to help provide our great little community with home-grown produce as well as keep our community safe while participating.

Thank you!
The SACBA Board of Directors
Bev Kovacs, Rosa Struthers, Diane Wilkinson, Isabel Ballard, Cookie Hicks, Aaron Hancock.
