We’re looking for individuals or groups who are willing to help us with our make-a-wish program for seniors. You participate by purchasing or donating one or more items or providing an experience for one of our seniors in subsidized assisted living. When you volunteer, you become an honorary member of our Everyday Angels of Will volunteer group—and a meaningful part of someone’s everyday happiness.
This is a project that truly reflects our mission: improving the quality of life for 35 low‑income seniors living in subsidized assisted living. When I first started Hyacinths, I imagined working one‑on‑one with seniors who were living alone on very limited incomes, and I do have participants who aren't institutionalized. But I wanted to go beyond simply meeting basic needs like food and shelter, and instead also find ways to connect with them socially—giving them something meaningful to look forward to each day. Food and shelter keep people alive, but they don’t necessarily help people live happily. That’s where Hyacinths comes in.
I’ve always wanted Hyacinths to grow organically—to respond to the challenges placed in front of us. And now we’re at one of those moments where we could really use some help. These 35 seniors, while provided with food, shelter, and homemaker services, are still living in poverty. All but $100 of their monthly income is paid to the organization that provides the assisted living services. They are left with only $100 a month to cover all personal hygiene and cleaning supplies. In today’s economy, that simply isn’t enough.
So, in order to bring a little joy and something positive to look forward to, Hyacinths is launching a simple “make‑a‑wish”‑style project just for them. We ask each person to list three items or experiences they aren’t able to access—because they can’t afford them.
Well, we've started to get responses, and it's not what was expected. We asked what would truly brighten their lives, no strings attached, and the requests were surprisingly simple. They wish for very basic items, many of which we take for granted.
Here are the first items requested:
Pamela - Body lotion, perfume and body spray.
Mary - Clothes (size 4X), shoes (size 7 1/2), necklace.
Miselenia - Shoulder purse, nightgown (size large), perfume.
Jayne - Tops (size 4X), necklace.
Debra - Dress pants (size 18), tops (size 1X), watch.
Alexander - Halle Berry tee shirt (size 3X), socks (size 11-13), tee shirts (size 3X).
Roger - Socks (size 9-11), tee shirts (size medium), jeans (size 30/30).
If you can help, or have questions, please message me by visiting the Hyacinths Services page. And if you could like and follow, that would be great.
