Our speaker, today, was Andrew Gaerte, Director of Development and Communications, Western New York Land Conservancy. Andrew did an excellent job of refreshing our memory of the protection of natural and agricultural properties in Niagara County and Western New York. He illustrated, with PowerPoint, the possibilities of the Western New York Wildway in providing a corridor for wildlife to move safely under highways and to have cover.

Rotary Club of Lockport has been participating in NYS's Adopt-A-Highway cleanup twice a year since the early 1990's. We were out there, again, October 17th picking up 15 large bags of (most everything except dead bodies)!

Yesterday, the Rotary Club of Lockport was honored to have our District Governor, Joanne Serkeyn as the speaker. She shared ideas for a more flexible Rotary organization and also promoted the emphasis she wants for understanding by Rotarians of the human trafficking societal problem. April 27th, 2027 the District celebration will be in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Connected with it will be a human trafficking understanding summit. Mark your calendars!

Our meeting last week was one for the history books!📖

Over 30 Lockport Rotarians attended the first meeting of the club in the "Rotary Club of Lockport Community Room" at the newly opened Kenan Center Civic Arena on September 8th.

Two new members were inducted into the club – David Dodd and Lt. Joshua Wesbee, pictured here with Club President Amanda Henning and Lt. Wesbee's membership sponsor Dan Wilson.

David Dodd is self-employed with his business, Diamond Landscape & Design while Lt. Wesbee is the current corps officer and pastor at The Salvation Army of Lockport.

In addition, two long-term Rotarians, Dick Mullaney and Eric Connor were given a new status of honorary members of the club, also pictured below with Club President Amanda Henning.

Our wonderful speakers were also recent additions to the Rotary family, as Rebekah Dash, Rebekah Hylton, and Brian Falsioni shared their new member "bios."

Dash is Community Impact Director of Cornerstone Community FCU while Hylton is Community Impact Coordinator for Cornerstone. Falsioni is a retiree who gives volunteer service to The Dale Association and does additional community benefit work.

Our speaker this past week was Rotary Peace Scholar Richelieu Allison.

Although there were a few technical difficulties, as he was zooming in from Liberia, the club still had an excellent experience hearing about his experiences fighting COVID, preventing violence, and supporting education initiatives to build a better future for the next generation. Thank you Richelieu 🇱🇷

It was also a bittersweet meeting, as it was our last lunch meeting at The Dale Association. Starting this week, we will be moving into our new home at the Kenan Center Civic Arena. Thank you to the Dale Association for not only being an incredible host, but also for your generous support of our club over the years 🙏

It's not too late to become informed about a scourge in Western New York and beyond. An informed public can contribute to fighting human trafficking which can occur in the best of communities.

Lauren Nagel and Riley Tsiolekis have been selected this year to receive scholarships from the Rotary Club of Lockport as selected by the Scholarship Committee of the club. They were presented with and spoke at the June 2nd Rotary meeting at the Dale Center.

Lockport Rotary Scholarships are awarded to students living in the Lockport school district and are graduates of either the district high school or a regional private or parochial high school. Selection is based on scholastic achievement, character, leadership, extracurricular and community activities. Applicants interview with the Rotary Scholarship Committee. The scholarships are presented in memory of Arthur H. Showalter, Summer G. Evan’s, Eleanor DePeau, Samuel Seltzer, Howard Lehmann and Donald O. Nixon, former Lockport Rotarians who were dedicated to youth and education. Scholarships funding is raised from proceeds from the annual Lockport Rotary Raffle event.

Today was a busy youth-oriented meeting at the Rotary Club of Lockport. Vanessa Mohr (left) and Nyema Campbell students at Lockport High School were recognized for having completed the Rotary-sponsored Junior Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) Award Program. Recommended by School Advisor, Brian Wilson the students completed a session introducing Rotary and values plus leadership practices and management tips at a weekend retreat in Ancaster, ON. In the photo, Rotarian Ellen Roth, organizer of the club’s involvement in RYLA makes remarks before presenting certificates to the students along with Vicki Smith, President. Thanks to Mike Florio and Steve Cotten for giving them rides students rides to and from their weekend retreat.
