Hi friends! I havenโ€™t posted on here in ages because this project was road blocked and then I had a baby! But Iโ€™m working for this agency now, resettling refugees, helping them find jobs and get established in the community. We rely heavily on donations, and our supplies are dwindling. Since the followers of this page initially wanted to help me to connect unneeded items with people who need them, I will share periodically to this page some of the things our clients could benefit from. If you have any of these items lying around (in good enough condition to give to a friend), please let me know and I can arrange to get them from you. Thanks!

March update! I was hoping to be up and running by now, but, patience is a virtue and all that! Here's what's been happening: I've spoken to a few people who are doing this work elsewhere, and gotten some great advice. I also spoke to someone who is already doing this work on a small scale in Lockport for the CARES homeless shelter there. She also gave me some good perspective but was not in a position to join forces due to limited storage space and (wo)man power. 501c3 status is basically out the window for now, as the other organizations have said they've been in the process for over a year and the IRS has pushed them to the back burner during covid. The other issue is that I forgot about bed bugs being a thing, and need to figure out how to make sure they do not happen to anyone because ๐Ÿคข. If anyone has any insight on cleaning second hand furniture and making sure that bed bugs never happen to us...that would be much appreciated! My thoughts are that I will just not be able to take donations from strangers/the general public, and some washing and sanitizing will need to happen before donating and moving in...I am also going to reach back out to the other organizations and see how they deter this issue. I have a meeting with the YW this week to see how they foresee things working, so we are getting somewhere albeit slowly! Will let you know when I can start taking your spring cleaning things- It will most likely be a smaller operation that I initially thought, and will just focus on the specific needs of each client as opposed to stockpiling stuff. To be continued ๐ŸŒž

Friday update, not a whole lot to report.... but, I want to use this page to document the process of getting started, for anyone out there who's curious about starting something themselves as well as for myself to look back on once I'm established and doing big things :D

So far I've contacted about...15 people who I'd hoped to partner with or get advice/help from, and gotten zero responses. Not even a "Hi I received your message but can't help you for x y z reason." Is this discouraging? Yes. Am I going to give up? nope. I know that people will be much more inclined to get involved once they see that I'm actually doing what I say I'm going to do, and I can show off the results of my efforts.

So I'm going to get things started on my own, with my own time and money. Why? I don't really know, maybe I'm crazy, but all I know is that I want to start something, something that is needed, and something that will have a lasting measurable effect on people's lives. I know and have seen firsthand that students can't learn, workers can't work and parents can't parent to their fullest potential when they can't rest comfortably in their own home. One of my favorite authors says to "just do the next right thing, one thing at a time" and that's what I'm doing!

So the rest of this month will be spent shopping for storage units, and next month I will start taking your furniture donations and hopefully serving my first client! I am also going to keep at the paperwork, so that I can get tax-exempt status which should open the door for some grants and bigger partnerships, but want to get it going before I finish all that because it will take some time. If I'm passionate enough about it to do a bunch of work and invest my own money to make it happen then, it probably can't fail right? ๐Ÿ˜…

I did create a venmo account, if you'd like to chip in toward my storage unit costs, you can do so by sending a few $ to on venmo!

To be continued, wish me luck! ๐Ÿ€-Sarah

Wow, so many likes and shares already, thank you 716! I am hoping to be up and running by March, I can't take any donations quite yet but thank you! I still need to get incorporated, which requires me to write bylaws, a basic business plan, and establish a board of directors. Then I can apply for 501c3 status, then I can apply for some grants. I will likely do some crowd funding to help with the initial expenses so I can get things going sooner... which shouldn't really be too much...just a few months worth of a storage unit and moving expenses :) I did put a quick website together which you can see off to the left, that has a list of what I will and won't be looking for when I can start taking donations! Stay tuned and thanks a bunch for your support! -Sarah

Hi everyone! This is the nonprofit I'm trying to start, to be based somewhere in Niagara County, most likely Lockport. Here's the story behind it:

I've been working and volunteering with people from various walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds (mostly on the lower end) for over a decade now. As such, I have become very aware of the struggles and barriers they face, and passionate about helping them in a way that is lasting and impactful. The people that I serve in my regular job, and the people (and animals) I serve in my volunteer jobs have been dealt some of the worst possible hands of cards that life has to offer. For many of them, every day is a struggle just to survive, let alone to actually get ahead and thrive.

Because of the work I do, I have become the person who friends and family will reach out to when they have items to donate like dishes and blankets and things, because they know that I will find a good home for them. More often than not, the people I serve have fled a violent situation, whether it be in their home country, or domestic violence locally. Many of them lack basic home furnishings (once they can even find housing, that's another whole issue), lack the funds to purchase them new and have them delivered, or the transportation to go pick them up and move them in themselves. Many lack a support network, many are single mothers with no childcare, I could go on and on. These situations are nearly impossible to be remedied without a comfortable place to rest, restore and get back on track.

So, I am attempting to start a nonprofit that will take gently used home furnishing donations and actually move them into the homes of these families that are starting out fresh...The aim would be not to just drop off some unwanted items but to make the homes comfortable, functional and beautiful; curtains, artwork and all... and to offer ongoing support and community resource connections to them as they navigate their new lives. I intend to focus on women and children who are transitioning out of DV or homeless shelters, refugee resettlement or foster care agencies.

The logistics I am still working out but, I envision a storage unit, movers, and case managers as being the main expenses (let me know if you have any local hookups on those if you're still reading!) I plan to apply for 501c3 status, incorporation, grants... my main referral partners would be those I already work for, I'd utilize the community resource connections I've already made and expand on them...exciting stuff but a lot of work no doubt. ๐Ÿ˜…

Like this page and follow along if you'd like to see the process of getting this going, and send positive vibes that I can actually make it happen! ๐Ÿ’–-Sarah
