A Workforce Win: Building Pathways Into the Trades

Getting someone into a construction career takes more than good intentions — it takes accredited training and partners willing to do the work of reaching people where they are.

ACI is an NCCER (National Center for Construction Education & Research) accredited training provider.
Between August 2025 and July 2026, that meant sponsoring 4 training programs with 4 community and education partners — Cincinnati College Preparatory Academy, Cincinnati Public Schools, Habitat for Humanity Greater Cincinnati, and Easterseals Redwood — to open the door to construction careers for youth and adults across the region.

ACI Member Win: Phase one of the new ambulatory services building at Good Samaritan Hospital is complete.

Turner Construction Company and TriHealth have finished the first phase of a five-story, 168,000-square-foot facility on the Good Samaritan campus — the centerpiece of a $240 million modernization. When it is fully open, it will bring cancer, emergency, heart, neurology, surgical and women's care services together in one building.

Health care work is among the most demanding this industry takes on. The campus stays open, patients are on site throughout, and the schedule has to hold anyway.
What outlasts the job: a hospital that serves this region for decades after the crews move on.
Congratulations to Turner Construction, TriHealth, and every trade partner and design team member on the project.

If your company had people on this job — steel, mechanical, electrical, drywall, glazing, sitework — tell us in the comments and we'll name your team. A project this size is a win a lot of companies share.

Have a win you'd like to share? Email [email protected] or tag ACI in your post, and we'll help you tell it.

Another workforce win: Mike O'Rourke, 2025 ACI Industry Icon.
Mike O'Rourke has spent 40 years in demolition, and the skylines he has helped reshape run well past this region. He started on jobsites at 12 years old, came up through the field, and took over as O'Rourke Wrecking Company president at 26 after his father's passing — then led the business through some of its most defining years.
The O'Rourke project list reads like a record of how this region has changed: the implosion of Riverfront Stadium, the demolition of the Millennium Hotel, the Cincinnati Convention Center expansion, the IRS headquarters in Covington. Complex, high-profile work, done to a standard of precision, safety and professionalism that others in the industry now measure themselves against.
He was early on sustainability, too. Two decades ago, well ahead of the industry, he established one of the region's first construction recycling operations — making demolition cleaner, safer and more responsible for the crews and communities that come next.
That is just a fraction of his career, which is why Mike was named the 2025 ACI Industry Icon. We are glad to welcome him back to present that same award on November 12, 2026, at Kenwood Country Club.
Know someone raising the bar for this industry? Nominate them! Nominations close October 1.

Find projects. Share projects. Submit bids. That's ACI Project Scout.
ACI Project Scout is a proprietary subscription platform for commercial bid opportunities in this region — public and private work across Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana.
That is the point of a regional platform-- to give more depth and detail to area projects than national platforms can provide.
The subscription stands on its own — no ACI membership required — and members subscribe at 57% off.
Run it alongside the service you're using-- at absolutely no cost for the first four weeks, and no obligation to subscribe. https://aci-web.com/membership/project-leads/

Women make up 11.5 percent of the people working in commercial construction in the Cincinnati region.
Women make up about half the region.
That gap is what ACI put in front of Cincinnati Business Courier readers this month.
There is a reason we buy this space. A trade association can make its case in plenty of rooms, and we do — but some conversations belong out in the open, where the whole business community can see them. When ACI takes out an ad in the Courier, we are using it to raise awareness of something our members care about and to put a real opportunity in front of people who can act on it.
This time, that opportunity is the ACI She Builds Scholarships, now accepting applications and donations. They support women pursuing careers in construction and the built environment. Applications close September 18.
If you know a woman weighing this industry, send her the link or tag her in the comments.

Another Workforce Win:
Jason Harvey has spent more than 25 years strengthening the construction workforce and opening doors for the next generation.
As Chief People Officer at Prus Construction, he built a nationally recognized apprenticeship program that pairs classroom learning with real-world experience and has graduated multiple cohorts of skilled tradespeople now working across our region. He also serves on advisory boards for schools and career centers across Greater Cincinnati, keeping what students learn aligned with what employers need. One student told him his words gave them the confidence to build a career in construction.
That work is why Jason was named the 2025 ACI Workforce Champion — and we are glad to welcome him back to present that same award on November 12, 2026, at Kenwood Country Club.
Know someone dedicated to the health of the construction workforce? Nominate them before October 1st.

A Workforce Win: Industry Safety

Last Tuesday, safety professionals from six companies walked the jobsite at The Farmer Music Center together — not as a one-off tour, but as part of the ongoing work of the ACI Safety Committee.
Messer Construction Co. led the walk. Committee members from cHc, Triversity Construction, Ohio Valley Electrical Services, Inc., Monarch Construction, and Pioneer Cladding & Glazing Systems LLC joined in, giving real-time feedback on what they saw on-site.

When the ACI Safety Committee meets, there is no competition — just camaraderie. Members identify and share the best practices that keep people safe on every jobsite in this region, not just their own.

🏆 ACI MEMBER WINS
P&G’s headquarters from 1935 to 1956 just checked in its first guests, thanks to more than a few ACI members.

The historic Gwynne Building is now the Fidelity Hotel — a 165-room luxury boutique property in the heart of downtown Cincinnati.
HGC Construction (Huseman Group) served as general contractor on the redevelopment. The numbers behind it:
▸ 420,000+ construction hours
▸ 80,000 hours of demolition
▸ 145 tradespeople on-site at peak
▸ 50+ subcontractors
▸ 18 miles of trim
▸ Enough drywall to cover 17 football fields
That’s not a renovation. That’s a resurrection.

Preserving a building like the Gwynne takes something you can’t value-engineer: craft. Every one of those 18 miles of trim was installed by someone who knew what they were doing.

Congratulations to HGC Construction, THP Limited Inc., and the 50+ subcontractor partners who brought this one home. 👏
Cincinnati keeps its history — and gains a landmark.

Women represent just 11.5% of the commercial construction professionals in our region. The ACI She Builds initiative is working to change that, especially through the ACI She Builds Scholarships.

Whether you know someone pursuing a college track or a career in the trades, financial assistance is available. Share this or tag someone who would benefit from applying. https://aci-web.com/she-builds/aci-she-builds-scholarship/
