Your grass called. It wants its nutrients back. ​

Grass clippings contain nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. When they enter our local waterways, they can contribute to excess nutrients in the water, resulting in algal blooms and lower dissolved oxygen levels. ​

Instead, avoid blowing clippings into the street. Leaving lawn clippings helps return nutrients to the soil and can even help reduce the need for fertilizer!

Today is Endangered Species Day, so we are celebrating the Guadualupe Orb! ​

Recently added to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species list in 2024, this native freshwater mussel plays an important role in maintaining water quality by naturally filtering water. ​

You can make a difference by preventing pollution from entering Plum Creek! Properly dispose of trash and use fertilizer wisely.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the recent Trash Free Gulf and Keep Lockhart Beautiful cleanup! ​

With the help of 25 volunteers, we collected 27 bags of trash totaling more than 58 pounds from Lockhart City Park. ​Thank you for helping keep our waterways clean! ​

🌱It's Soil Stewardship Week! 🌱​

Did you know that water quality is connected to soil health? Healthy soil can prevent excess runoff and erosion. Soil can also recycle nutrients like nitrates and phosphorus, reducing algae blooms. ​

What can you do to improve your soil health? ​
🌿Implement buffer strips and riparian zones. These areas can filter pollutants from runoff before it reaches the water. ​
🍀Plant cover crops. Legumes, grasses, or clover can protect the soil from erosion and high temperatures that might kill beneficial microbes. ​
🧪Test your soil. Apply fertilizers only when necessary. ​
✂️Leave grass clippings. Your lawn will appreciate the naturally recycled nutrients! ​

Check with your local Soil & Water Conservation District or USDA Natural Resource Conservation Office for additional resources.
