A Plea for Wildlife

When you find a wild animal in distress, what you do as a first responder decides the fate of that animal. Too many wild animals are dying and suffering needlessly along with pain and heartbreak for everyone involved in their care, all because of a lack of information on proper actions to be taken for wildlife emergencies.

What is even more heartbreaking, is that the people with the utmost care and compassion for the animal, end up taking the wrong actions due to a lack of information.

ARRC would like to raise awareness on the Dos and Don’ts when you find a wild animal in distress. Please help us in our mission by sharing these posters widely.

Planning to do some spring tree cutting or pruning soon? Here’s a great procrastination excuse!

It’s best to wait until late fall to cut down dead trees. In most areas of the US, mother squirrels and raccoons have already given birth in dead tree hollows. Woodpecker and songbird nesting is soon to follow. Tomorrow we’ll post some advice for the cases in which there's no way around cutting down a tree this spring.

I have rescued and relocated many native snakes over the last 20 years, but today was a first for me!

I received a call from a lady who told me she found a python in her carport. I, of course, thought it was a case of mistaken identity, and chuckled at the notion. Her husband brought it to me this morning in a bucket. I was anxiously waiting for him to remove the lid and see for myself this snake he called a "ball python."

Well low and behold staring up at me was indeed a ball python...native to Africa, but commercially bred and sold in America as an exotic pet. This specimen is either an escaped pet, or was dumped by someone, thinking it could survive in our climate.

This amazing snake is very lucky! It chose the right house with people who are snake friendly, and have a family member who knew to contact me. Had it chosen to go elsewhere, it's fate could have been much worse...death!

I am fostering this snake until the owner contacts me. They must provide me with specific information, physical character traits, and a home check before I release it back to them. I know some of you are thinking, "all snakes look and act the same", but for those of us who own snakes as pets, they are as individual as a cat or a dog. If an owner does not come forward, I will make it a part of my family. -kelliecopeland

Please don't trap animals without a VERY good reason. Them living under your deck or in your shed is NOT a good enough reason. Pepper was trapped and removed from her home and probably injured in the process. DO NOT let a trapper take away babies, they will not be treated well. Call a wildlife rehabber instead. Please leave the wildlife alone in your yard. These animals don't hurt anything. She would have moved on by now and you would be missing some rats.
