The South Texas Longhorn Association - STLA

The South Texas Longhorn Association - STLA STLA is recognized as the oldest affiliate of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America /TLB

We are the oldest TLBAA affiliate (formed in 1975) and have strived to remain one of the largest and most active affiliates within the TLBAA. Each year, we sponsor four World-qualifying Texas Longhorn shows: The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Austin Show (Star of Texas Rodeo), STLA Winter Fest Show (Edna, Texas), and the STLA Rockdale Show, which is three separate shows that span three-days. Addi

tionally, the STLA holds a large all-day Field Day & Ranch Tour every May in conjunction with our Annual General Meeting. Members and other guests have the chance to tour a STLA-member’s ranch at this event and get an up-close look at their Texas Longhorn herd and learn more about their breeding program. Along with a tasty lunch, guests also get the opportunity to listen to various speakers during the day that provide ongoing education on subjects of concern for ranchers and breeders. As stewards of this magnificent breed, the STLA believes that ongoing education for everyone involved with raising Texas Longhorn cattle is vitally important to maintaining the integrity of the breed. The STLA also hosts a Fall Field Day each year, which has included everything from ranch tours, chili cookoffs, satellite horn measuring events and full-weekend field trips. In 2012, the STLA partnered with the Blinn College Ag Sciences Department to present a Texas Longhorn Breed Characteristics & Judging Clinic, which was a huge success. A large part of the work done by STLA centers on activities to help our young people. Having had a Scholarship Program back in earlier years that faded away, the Board of Directors revived the Youth Scholarship Program in 2006 and through ongoing dedication now presents educational scholarships each year to graduating high-school seniors based on two levels of criteria that allows the graduates to qualify for the funding. At least 3-5 students have qualified and benefitted from this ongoing program each year since 2006 and, in 2009, STLA began partnering with Central Life Sciences to increase funding for these scholarships.
