Friends of Lake Livingston

Friends of Lake Livingston Encouraging Nature. Engaging Community. The fishery was an economic engine for the local economy. In addition, invasive aquatic plants have caused more damage.

For 10-15 years after its creation, Lake Livingston in East Texas was a bass fishing destination with numerous regional and national bass fishing tournaments held on the lake. Natural sedimentation and extensive shoreline development have hurt the shoreline habitat for breeding fish. A plan, developed by Texas Black Bass Unlimited and the Piney Wood Lakes Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists, laid

out key goals:
Restore lost habitat by planting American water-willow (Justicia Americana) on shorelines, islands, and shallow water flats
Reduce shoreline erosion, improve water filtration and quality, and provide habitat for juvenile fish, reptiles and birds
Enlist local high schools to grow, propagate, and plant
Educate students on the economic and ecological impact of a healthy habitat

Lake Livingston Friends of Reservoirs was born. Since then, 2,500 water willows have been grown and planted in two areas of the lake, funds have been raised, and work continues. 24 Texas state and local organizations, including 6 school districts, are volunteering and supporting LLFoR to achieve its goals.
