As July comes to a close, we’re reflecting on all the ways we experience summertime in Park County. You may be busy putting up hay and managing water—recharging in the quiet moments in between, pausing to take it all in. Or perhaps you’ve spent your free time floating or fishing our rivers and creeks, or exploring the wilderness and soaking up the beauty of the wildflowers.

Whether you were born and raised here or settled in Park County later, we are all lucky to call this place home—and we share an obligation to protect what makes it

Since 1995, our team has partnered with local families to protect over 22,000 acres of wild and working lands in Park County. But with development pressure growing, our work is far from over.

What stories will we write on this landscape? 🏔️

Some stories are written over centuries by rivers and glaciers carving out valleys or wildlife following ancient migration routes. Others are written in quiet, fleeting moments: the alpine glow in the Crazies, casting a line at sunrise on the Yellowstone, or watching a fawn take its first wobbly steps.

But with rapid land-use changes and subdivision, we have to ask ourselves: What stories are we writing on this land today, and what experiences will we leave behind for the next generation?

Some places have a way of staying with you. 🏔️

When people think about Yellowstone, they picture the national park. But Yellowstone has never existed as an island, and wildlife don’t recognize lines on a map.

Park County is a mosaic of public lands, working farms and ranches, rivers, wildlife habitat, and small communities where wildness is still part of everyday life.

Over the past few decades, thousands of acres of open land have been lost to subdivision and low-density development. Like every community, Park County will continue to grow and change. Not every acre needs to stay the same, but some places are simply too important to lose. The farms, ranches, and big open lands beyond the park do more than support agriculture, clean water, healthy soils, and wildlife migration—they create the experiences that give this place its character.

That's why Northern Yellowstone Open Lands works alongside willing landowners and community partners to conserve the open spaces that hold this landscape together.

Sound conservation depends on trust.

One of the things we value most about being part of Gallatin Valley Land Trust (GVLT) is the strength and accountability that come with the support of an accredited land trust. Last year, GVLT once again earned accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, a recognition of high standards in land conservation, financial stewardship, organizational leadership, and long-term commitment to the land.

For us, that support matters. It means our work in Park County is backed by strong conservation practice, lasting stewardship, and an organization committed to doing things the right way.
