This morning, in a Special Session, the Polk County Commissioners Court rescinded the Order Prohibiting Outdoor Burning. Visit the Polk County Emergency Management website at oem.polktx.gov to view the Order.

Use extreme caution when burning outdoors. Even light winds can cause a fire to spread quickly. Never leave a fire unattended. Stay informed on fire weather alerts. Keep a dependable water source nearby so you can quickly extinguish a fire if it starts to spread.

BURN BAN LIFTED!!!
No burning an hour after sunset!!!!

Message from AlertMePolkCounty

A burn ban is in effect for Polk County.

Dry fuels, unusually warm temperatures, and elevated fire weather conditions are creating an environment where wildfires can ignite and spread quickly. Strong winds and several days of drying have increased the likelihood of fires becoming difficult to control, especially in high‑risk vegetation areas. With no rainfall expected and fire danger remaining moderate to high across much of Texas, a burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of wildfires.

This morning in an emergency session, the Polk County Commissioners Court issued an order prohibiting outdoor burning for the unincorporated areas of the County. The Order will be available for review on the Polk County Emergency Management website and page.

There was an explosion at the Goodrich Recycling Yard on Hwy. 59 North in Goodrich. Goodrich instantly responded arriving within 3 minutes. With more explosions happening and fear of happening…numerous neighboring fire departments have been called to assist. Please keep all of these fire fighters in your prayers. This is a very volatile situation. Please avoid this area.

From the office of of OEM:

Prepare for Arctic Cold Front and Wintry Precipitation
A powerful cold front will arrive late Friday into Saturday, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season. The cold air will overlap with some lingering moisture behind the cold front, leading to the potential for freezing rain or sleet Saturday into Sunday. This is still several days away, so please monitor the forecast for any changes. Stay weather-aware, prepare now, and consider adjusting your travel plans for the weekend.

Remember even a small amount of ice can cause hazardous roads and power outages.

Monitor DriveTexas.org for TXDOT road condition updates.

Visit ready.gov/power-outages for tips on how to prepare for power outages. Remember to use generators safely.

Assemble an Emergency Supply kit. Have plenty of food and water for drinking and sanitation should your home pipes freeze or should your water supply provider experience a disruption.

Dress warmly. The National Weather Service forecasts dangerous wind chill temperatures over the weekend.

Protect people, pets, plants, and pipes.

MAJOR WINTER STORM…

A full blown Winter Storm is developing for late Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. The newest data got worse with widespread impacts for most of Texas. The Arctic air is coming in faster with deeper cold.

Moderate to Heavy snow in Oklahoma on Friday. It’s starts as rain in DFW early Friday as the Arctic starts coming in. By nightfall it starts freezing as the low pressure gets closer creating more lift as the cold air starts to deepen. Saturday looks down right ugly. Freezing rain to winter mix all day in low to mid 20s. The winter mix moves into Austin, East Texas down to San Antonio later Saturday afternoon into the evening. Still freezing rain to sleet mix in DFW ALL DAY. The colder air moves down into Houston Saturday night into Sunday morning as they transition to freezing rain.

DFW looks to transition to snow on the backside Saturday night into Sunday morning. The latest data has it extending longer into Sunday morning. Temps in the low teens to some single digits in Dallas on Sunday morning with wind chills below zero. Brrr!!

It’s too early to talk precipitation amounts and try to figure out how much snow sleet or freezing rain for each area. There is a ton of liquid with this system and it won’t be pretty. It’s looking worse into East Texas, Arkansas. A lot to unpack in the coming days.

Expect a lot of cancellations and delays. The best advice I can give you right now is plan to stay home Friday night to Sunday morning if at all possible. We’re going be dealing with power outages from the Southern Plains Eastward up to the mid Atlantic. This is a massive Winter storm!

Temps stay below freezing late Friday to Monday afternoon. The precipitation ends by late Sunday morning in DFW. It’s impossible to know right know how much will melt on Sunday if we stay below freezing all day Sunday. The lows in the teens Monday morning. So I don’t know about any school closures Monday at this point. I’ve had a lot asking.
