June 9, 2026 — Commemoration of the Virgins St. Nooneh and St. Maneh

Today the Armenian Church commemorates the holy virgins St. Nooneh and St. Maneh, two faithful companions of St. Hripsime who fled Rome to Armenia during the fierce persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. While many of their companions received the crown of martyrdom, God had prepared a different mission for Nooneh and Maneh, one that would leave a lasting spiritual legacy.

After arriving in Armenia, St. Maneh withdrew from the world and settled in a secluded cave on Mount Sepouh in the region of Ekeghyats. There she devoted her life entirely to prayer, fasting, and communion with God. Living in complete solitude, she was sustained by divine grace and became known for her angelic way of life. Her cave later became known as “Maneh’s Cave,” a place remembered for her holiness and dedication. Tradition tells us that near the end of her life, St. Gregory the Illuminator himself sought a place of seclusion and was guided to the same cave. Upon approaching, he heard the saint’s voice asking him to return three days later. When he came back, he found that St. Maneh had peacefully departed this life, and he reverently buried her in the cave in the year 323.

St. Nooneh’s mission led her beyond Armenia to Georgia. There, through unwavering faith, fervent prayer, and the preaching of the Gospel, she became the instrument through which an entire nation came to know Christ. Her miracles and acts of compassion touched countless lives, including the royal family. After healing the queen through prayer, she gained the respect of the king and people, yet she humbly refused earthly rewards and continued proclaiming the Gospel. King Mihran eventually embraced Christianity, followed by many nobles and citizens. Through St. Nooneh’s efforts, Georgia officially received the Christian faith, earning her the honored title of “Apostle of Georgia.”

May their courage, humility, and devotion inspire us to remain steadfast in faith and to serve God wherever He calls us.

June 8, 2026 - The Bethlehem Infants, the Martyr Acacius, the Priest Movkima, and the Soldier Kodratius

In the Gospel according to St. Matthew, we read about the slaying of the innocent children prior to the birth of Jesus Christ (Matthew 2:16-18). Men, who had come from the East to Jerusalem, spread the news of the birth of a “baby born to be the king of the Jews”. When this news reached Heron, King of Judea, he became very troubled. As a result of his jealousy and rage in not being able to locate the newborn baby, the King orders the death of all male children in Bethlehem who are two years old and younger. The blood of the innocent children became the first blood shed for the sake of Christ. The Armenian Church has dedicated many church hymns and songs to the memory of the Children of Bethlehem, and they are commemorated on the Monday following the Feast of the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin.

The same day the Armenian Church celebrates the memory of three saints, martyred for the sake of Christianity - Acacius the Witness, Movkima the Priest and Kotriatos the Soldier.According to “Haysmavourk”, Acacius was martyred for the faith during the reign of the Emperor Likianos. Being subjected to indescribable torments and managing to survive surrounded by wild beasts, the saint was beheaded in 310 AD.

Movkima the Priest, Byzantine by birth, was the son of a high-ranking Christian officer. Being a devout preacher of Christianity, he was subjected to many torments by the governor of the city Ampipolis of Macedonia. Later, he was sent to Byzantium, where he was condemned to death by beheading. Emperor Constantine would later build a magnificent church over the tomb of the saint.

Kotriatos the Soldier was martyred as a result of persecutions by the pagan King Dekos. Considering himself to be a “servant of the Heavenly King”, the brave saint endured many tortures through the strength of his Christian faith and became an example for others to remain steadfast in times of trouble. Kotriatos was also put to death by beheading.
