June is Women’s Fly Fishing Month.

This month, we celebrate the women who cast farther than fly lines. The women who teach, mentor, encourage, explore, and build community on and off the water.

Through FFI Women Connect, women across North America are gathering for local outings, online events, workshops, fly tying nights, casting sessions, conservation programs, and more. Whether you’re brand new to fly fishing or have spent decades on the water, there’s a place for you here.

Fly fishing is more than a sport. It’s friendship, confidence, adventure, and connection.

Join us this June as we celebrate the growing community of women in fly fishing and help welcome the next generation to the water.

The 3rd Annual Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival, proudly supported by Chesapeake Council - FFI, is happening this weekend in Thomas, WV.

This free, family-friendly event celebrates everything that makes fly fishing special: community, conservation, education, and time on the water. Held in the heart of the Appalachian Highlands, the festival features fly tying demonstrations, casting instruction, educational presentations, vendors, food, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow anglers. Highlights include sessions from Fly Fishers International instructors, Trout Unlimited representatives, and regional fly fishing experts. An ongoing casting competition will keep things lively throughout the weekend.

Surrounded by some of the finest wild trout water in the Mid-Atlantic, Thomas is the perfect setting for a weekend dedicated to our sport. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting started, there's something here for everyone.

If you're attending, let us know in the comments. We'd love to hear what sessions or demonstrations you're most excited about.

Join Us in Stopping the Sale of Consumers Energy’s Dams!

Michigan’s rivers, communities, and ratepayers are facing a critical moment.
The Great Lakes Council has joined with the Michigan Hydro Relicensing Coalition, Michigan Trout Unlimited, Anglers of the Au Sable, and the Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fishermen’s Association to oppose Consumers Energy’s proposed sale of 13 aging hydropower dams to Hull Street Energy and its subsidiary, Confluence Hydro.

This proposed sale would:
• Lock Michigan families into higher electric bills for the next 30 years
• Shift financial risk away from Consumers and onto ratepayers
• Raise serious concerns about long-term dam maintenance and public safety
• Put rivers, fisheries, recreation opportunities, and surrounding communities at greater risk

Recent flooding events and near catastrophic dam failures are reminders that aging infrastructure demands stronger oversight, not less accountability.
Consumers’ own studies have shown that dam removal is often the safest and most economical long-term solution for restoring healthy rivers, improving fisheries, and protecting communities from future failures.

We need your help.

Your tax-deductible donation will directly support this historic effort to protect Michigan’s rivers, safeguard communities, and keep electric rates fair.

Please consider making a contribution today:

Every dollar helps. Thank you for standing up for Michigan’s future.

Chironomids are one of the most important, and most overlooked, food sources in stillwater fly fishing.

Join Women Connect for our Thursday Vise Squad as we tie the Chironomid Bomber, a highly effective pattern designed to get down deep where the biggest fish live.

You’ll learn how to tie a large pupa pattern that imitates midge larvae found in lakes and rivers year-round, from shallow water to depths over 100 feet. We’ll walk through key materials, colour variations, and practical techniques that help this fly sink quickly and fish effectively in the strike zone .

Along the way, you’ll pick up valuable insights into chironomid behaviour, when and where to fish them, and why they are so often the difference-maker on stillwater days.

As always, the session includes tips, live tying, Q&A, a prize draw, and a welcoming community of women who love to learn and share.

Thursday, March 26
5 PT | 6 MT | 7 CT | 8 ET
Hosted by Sandy Carpenter
Featuring Dre Valerie Julie Brousseau

You’ll hear how they worked through challenges, stayed committed, and found confidence along the way. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to take the next step, you’ll come away with practical ideas and encouragement for your own casting journey.
