One of the most valuable resources available through the Fly Fishers International Fly Tying Group is the monthly Fly of the Month feature. Each month showcases a unique pattern, complete with its history, materials list, step-by-step tying instructions, and high-quality photography to help tiers expand their skills and discover new flies.

This month's featured pattern is the Married Wing Mickey Finn, tied and presented by Eric Austin and originally created by John Alden Knight. The Mickey Finn became famous in the 1930s as a highly effective trout streamer, but this version takes the classic pattern a step further with beautifully crafted married goose-quill wings. The pattern traces its roots to Canada, where versions of the fly were tied and sold by Montreal's Fin, Fur and Feather Limited tackle company.

Whether you're interested in traditional streamer patterns, improving your winging techniques, or simply exploring the rich history of fly tying, this is a pattern worth adding to your vise.

June is Women’s Fly Fishing Month.

This month, we celebrate the women who cast farther than fly lines. The women who teach, mentor, encourage, explore, and build community on and off the water.

Through FFI Women Connect, women across North America are gathering for local outings, online events, workshops, fly tying nights, casting sessions, conservation programs, and more. Whether you’re brand new to fly fishing or have spent decades on the water, there’s a place for you here.

Fly fishing is more than a sport. It’s friendship, confidence, adventure, and connection.

Join us this June as we celebrate the growing community of women in fly fishing and help welcome the next generation to the water.
