Catskill Fly Tyers Guild

Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Preserving, protecting and enhancing the Catskill fly tying heritage, while promoting the development of future generations of Catskill fly tyers.

About the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild
In 1993 Floyd Franke and Matthew Vinciguerra formed the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild. These individuals recognized the need for an organization that would:

- Preserve, protect and enhance the Catskill fly tying heritage.

- Work cooperatively to promote the work of present Catskill fly tyers.

- Provide a forum for the sharing of information.

- Promote the developm

ent of future generations of Catskill fly tyers. Members of the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild firmly believe that the development of fly fishing in the Catskill Mountains of New York is synonymous with the development of fly fishing in the United states. This rich heritage is seen as the foundation of the Guild's present efforts.

Join us Saturday, May 16 for a full day of hackle, history, and Catskill fly tying tradition at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum.

Our next in-person Catskill Fly Tyers Guild meeting will feature Charlie Collins presenting on hackle from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM in the Wulff Gallery. Charlie’s presentations are always exceptional, and this is a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of the great names in Catskill fly tying.

Charlie will also be bringing Collins hackle for sale — and with supplies dwindling, this may be one of the last chances to purchase hackle directly from Charlie himself. Please remember to bring cash if you plan to purchase hackle.

We’ll also have open tying throughout the meeting, so bring your vise and spend the day with us.

And don’t head home afterward…

Stay on at Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum for the evening presentation with David Atwood, “An Evening with Chip Stauffer,” beginning at 4:00 PM. David will share the remarkable story and history surrounding one of fly fishing’s most fascinating figures, along with the rich history of hackle in the Catskills.

It should be a wonderful full day celebrating Catskill fly tying heritage.

This Thursday, March 26 at 7:00 PM, we close out the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Winter Tying Series with the Cross Special—a Rube Cross pattern and true classic Catskill dry fly.

It’s been a great winter at the vise. Thank you to everyone who joined us each week, shared in the sessions, and helped make this series something special. And a sincere thank you to our guest tyers for their time, skill, and generosity.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the water soon.

Members only. The Zoom link has been emailed.

Don’t miss Tyler Morehouse tying the Furnace Dun for the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Winter Tying Session.

The Furnace Dun is known for its warm, rich tones and elegant balance—just the kind of pattern that feels right as winter loosens its grip and the season begins to turn toward spring.

With the rivers opening up and trout season just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to gather, tie, and look ahead to the days on the water.

The final class in our Essential Skills for Beginning Catskill Tyers series — Pink Lady.

Join us Tuesday, March 17th at 7 PM as Christina Muller walks us step-by-step through this classic dry fly first introduced by George La Branche in the early 1900s and still a favorite today.

In this session we’ll work on mounting slip wings, wrapping smooth silk bodies, and ribbing with tinsel — while continuing to reinforce the Catskill proportions and techniques developed throughout the series.

Over the past several weeks we’ve built skills and confidence at the vise while exploring a set of classic Catskill patterns.

As always, substitutions are welcome — the focus is learning how to work with the materials you have.

A Zoom link will be sent to guild members prior to the class. We hope you’ll join us for the final session.

Thursday, March 12 • 7:00 PM

Join us for the next Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Winter Tying session.

The demonstration fly will be The Fish Hawk (from Ray Bergman’s Trout*)*, tied by Christina Muller. This classic wet fly pattern reflects the rich heritage of American fly tying and remains a beautiful and effective design at the vise and on the water.

As March arrives and the snow begins to melt in the Catskills, trout season is just around the corner — making it the perfect time to gather, tie, and look forward to the coming fishing season.

Next up in our Essential Skills for Beginning Catskill Tyers series — Red Quill.

Join us Tuesday, March 10th at 7 PM as Christina Muller walks us through tying one of the most iconic Catskill dry flies, originally popularized by Art Flick.

In this session we’ll focus on setting wood duck wings and preparing and wrapping quill bodies — while continuing to reinforce the proportions and techniques introduced in earlier classes.

Each class builds on the last, helping you develop skills and confidence at the vise.

As always, substitutions are welcome — the focus is learning how to work with the materials you have.

A Zoom link will be sent to guild members prior to the class. We hope you’ll tie along with us.

Thursday, March 5 • 7 PM

Join us for another Catskill Fly Tyers Guild Winter Tying session.

This week’s demonstration fly is the Ken Lockwood Streamer, a classic trout streamer named in honor of Kenneth Lockwood (d. 1948) — a prominent New Jersey outdoor journalist, conservationist, and former president of the Fish and Game Conservation League.

Whether you tie along or simply enjoy the demonstration, these winter sessions are a great way to stay connected and celebrate the traditions of fly tying during the colder months.

Zoom link has been emailed to members. We hope to see you there.

Next up in our series — Whitcraft
Tuesday, March 3rd at 7 PM

Join us for Class 2 of Essential Skills for Beginning Catskill Tyers as Christina Muller walks us step-by-step through the Whitcraft — a novel twist on the classic Adams found in Mike Valla’s Classic Dry Fly Box.

This week we’ll focus on mounting hackle-tip wings, adding ribbing, and winding a balanced two-hackle collar — all while reinforcing the proportions and thread control introduced in our first session.

Each class builds on the last, helping you develop skills and confidence at the vise.

As always, substitutions are welcome — the focus is learning how to work with the materials you have.

Zoom link has been emailed to guild members.
We hope you’ll tie along with us.

Fly Fest – February 28

What a special day at the Rockland House.

A full room, busy tying tables, bucket raffles in the center, and conversations flowing from morning through afternoon. Old friends, new friends, shared stories, and a deep appreciation for the Catskill tradition that connects us all.

There’s something meaningful about spending a day like this together — honoring the history, practicing the craft, and strengthening the friendships that make this community what it is.

Grateful for everyone who showed up and helped make it such a memorable day.

Thank you to the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum for organizing and sponsoring the event!
