Catskill Art Space Catskill Art Space explores contemporary art practices and fosters creative community.

Catskill Art Space (CAS) is a nonprofit organization that brings contemporary art experiences to the Catskills and facilitates creative and professional development for established and emerging artists. Based in a newly expanded multi-arts center, our exhibitions are free, accessible, and open to the public. CAS presents the work of artists at varying stages of their careers, including internationally renowned figures and emerging talent local to the area. Our exhibitions are complemented by performance events, lectures, screenings, and classes for kids and adults, inviting visitors and locals alike to engage with the richness and diversity of contemporary art practices.

We’re thrilled to welcome to Catskill Art Space for a special residency devoted to PRESENT TENSE (2003), the landmark collaboration between choreographer Trisha Brown and artist Elizabeth Murray.

Produced with , the residency will bring dancers to rehearse and reconstruct this exuberant work, culminating in a free public presentation Saturday, October 10 at 4PM.

Coinciding with the residency, CAS is presenting a selection of Elizabeth Murray’s works on paper that served as studies for the backdrop she created for PRESENT TENSE. On view in the River Gallery through December 27, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to encounter Murray’s visual thinking alongside the choreography it helped shape.

Together, the exhibition and residency illuminate the dynamic exchange between Brown and Murray—two artists whose practices were grounded in movement, experimentation, scale, and a refusal of conventional boundaries between disciplines.

Come witness this extraordinary intersection of dance and visual art, and get an intimate glimpse into the process of bringing Brown and Murray’s work into the present.

We’re thrilled to see Catskill Art Space featured in Hyperallergic’s “10 Art Shows to See in Upstate New York This September”! ✨

Currently on view at CAS: Brett De Palma, R.M. Fischer, and Judy Glantzman, bringing together three distinctive artistic practices in our Main Street galleries through October 31.

Catskill Art Space is closed today, Sunday, August 30 for installation. We will reopen on Saturday, September 5 with new exhibitions from Brett De Palma , R.M. Fischer .rm and Judy Glantzman .

Bringing together three distinct and deeply personal practices, the exhibitions offer a meditation on process, discovery, and the stubborn vitality of image-making. R.M. Fischer returns to early works stored in an art storage shed on his Catskill mountain property — photographic deconstructions from the early 1970s that laid the groundwork for the lamp sculptures and public art for which he is widely known. Judy Glantzman approaches painting as a playground, her canvases populated by invented characters treated with utmost sincerity. For Glantzman, paint becomes luminous and remains an object simultaneously — the dichotomy between illusion and materiality beating at the heart of her practice. Brett De Palma constructs sardonic, psychedelic visual puzzles that resist easy resolution, embracing the raw, the funky, and the deliberately impure as tools for truth-telling.

Alyssa Myers .always & Aurora Vaughan — New York City-based dance artists and long-term collaborators whose work centers human connection, embodied inquiry, and interdisciplinary exchange. Both graduates of the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, they create process-driven work rooted in curiosity, relational practice, and genderless partnering. Myers is Director of (All)Ways Dance Company, while Vaughan serves as Associate and Rehearsal Director. Their collaborative work spans performance, research, film, and community engagement.

The Ardsley Dance Residency returns this Friday with open rehearsals. Witness creation in practice. Claude “CJ” Johnson is joined with his collaborators for a deliberate intensive to workshop new dance. Join us during open hours, Friday and Saturday, 11am - 5pm.

Claude “CJ” Johnson — Chicago native, Brooklyn-based dancer, choreographer, and movement director, whose work is grounded in self-expression, community, and social change. A former company member of A.I.M by Kyle Abraham and a 2021 Princess Grace nominee, CJ has performed and created work with an extraordinary range of artists and companies, while developing his own choreography through residencies at Baryshnikov Arts Center, The Joyce Theater, CUNY Dance Initiative, and more.

The Ardsley Dance Residency is produced with the Dance Gallery Festival .

The Ardsley Dance Mini Residency, produced with Dance Gallery Festival invites you behind the scenes on Friday, August 28 & Saturday, August 29, from 11 AM–5 PM at CAS. Two choreographic voices Claude "CJ" Johnson and Alyssa Myers .janae.m and Aurora Vaughan will open up their creative processes and invite audiences into the room.

Come witness the process—not just the finished product. Drop in, observe, engage, and experience dance as it takes shape in real time.
