National Burn Awareness Week reminds us that most childhood burns happen at home — and many are preventable.

Scalds from tableware and contact with hot surfaces are among the leading causes of emergency burns in children under five. Awareness, education, and simple safety measures can save lives and prevent lifelong injuries.

Healing from a burn takes more than emergency care. It takes time, specialized treatment, emotional support, and a place where families feel safe and cared for.

COANIQUEM supports children and families from all over the country, offering free, comprehensive burn rehabilitation — often for years, if needed.
We saw the importance of this again during the recent wildfires in southern Chile. When families needed help, COANIQUEM was already there — with medical teams, experience, and deep community trust.

Right now, southern Chile is facing one of the most devastating wildfire emergencies in its history.

Entire neighborhoods in the Biobío region have been destroyed. More than 20,000 people have been forced to flee their homes. Hospitals have been evacuated. And families are coping not only with loss — but with serious burn injuries that require urgent, specialized care.

As this crisis unfolds, COANIQUEM is already on the ground.

COANIQUEM’s rehabilitation center in Concepción immediately mobilized to support the Regional Hospital, working directly with emergency and burn units. Their medical teams are also providing wound care in affected communities like Penco, Lirquén, and El Pino, bringing treatment to people who cannot safely reach hospitals.

This is what does — not just in hospitals, but in the heart of emergencies.

But this level of response is only possible because COANIQUEM’s work is sustained year-round.

And that’s where we play a critical role.
