Summers in the Tri-Valley area are hot, and expected to get hotter due to climate change, but here's a few reminders on how to be climate resilient:

☀️ Limit intense outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat
🌳 Go to local cooling centers (community centers, libraries, etc)
📱 Check local AQI before going outdoors

Clean indoor air is essential and is more affordable than having respiratory and other health issues. If your gas appliances need to be replaced, now is the time to take advantage of the Bay Area Air District Clean HEET Program. Get rebates for installing heat pump! The region is finalizing its first-in-the-nation rule to limit the sale of polluting gas water heaters, which will take effect next year.

☁May to October has the most concentrated ground-level ozone in the Tri-Valley area. Children, elders, pregnant women, and/or those with respiratory sensitivities are more prone to its impacts. To reduce emissions, choose electric counterparts of lawn equipment and kitchen appliances, and ventilate/turn on your indoor air cleaner.

☁What is ground-level ozone? Ozone is created when emissions from cars and industry react with sunlight, and summer/fall has the strongest sunlight

☁ Tri-Valley Air Quality Climate Alliance has been proud to be part of the Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative (SMMI) -- a first-of-its-kind program that maps air quality block-by-block in California communities that are most burdened by pollution.

☁ SMMI was built through deep community partnerships and 128 community meetings, ensuring that the voices of those most affected by pollution shaped the program. It will make hyperlocal air quality data available to 5.2 million Californians across 64 communities – empowering residents, researchers, and policymakers to take action on local air quality in ways that have never been possible before.

☁ SMMI is at risk of ending without continued funding. We are asking Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan and Senator Jerry McNerney's support for the budget extension to keep this work going. Our communities deserve clean air. They deserve to know what's in it. And they deserve leaders who will fight for it.

Today, 5/11, Bay Area air quality is expected to be Moderate in all regions. Tomorrow, 5/12, air quality is expected to be Good in all regions.

This week, air quality is expected to be in the Good to low-Moderate AQI category. Monday and Tuesday, high pressure is forecast to remain over the Bay Area, bringing warm temperatures (highs in the mid-80s to around 90 degrees) with continued onshore flow. Wednesday and Thursday, an upper-level low-pressure system is forecast to move into the Pacific Northwest, bringing cooler temperatures (highs in the 70s) and isolated rain showers. Friday through Sunday, high pressure is expected to rebuild over the East Pacific Ocean, bringing seasonable temperatures (highs in the low- to mid-80s) with moderate onshore winds.

🌼Pollen is usually not included in air quality reports because it is typically larger than other inhalable air particles (PM 2.5, PM 10), but tools such as Breezometer, AAAI, Pollen.com can help map pollen count.
