On Saturday, Oct 9, 2021, the Douglass High School Alumni & Historical Association held unveiling ceremonies for two historical Markers for Florida Memorial College / University and Harry Tyson Moore. The locations and the placement of these Marker will spotlight our community's rich cultural heritage.

We want to thank all the program participants, the City of Live Oak, Suwannee Parks & Recreation for their support, and the public for their attendance for this historic day in Live Oak!

We would be remiss if we did not name our main speakers, Dr. Tameka Hobbs (FMU Administration) for the Florida Memorial College ceremony and Mrs. Evelyn Moore Mickle (Douglass Class 1963) for the Harry T. Moore ceremony. And the two youth that read the text on the markers, Master Wylder Stephens, 7th grade, Suwannee Middle School, and Miss Jennifer Howard, Melody Christian Academy, 5th grade. In addition, the youth from the DEVOTED 4-H clubs were integrally involved in the programs!

Christmas Greetings,

The Board of Directors of the Douglass Alumni Association feels Christmas is the perfect season to express our appreciation to its members, supporters, and well-wishers.

This year, as most of you are aware, in our small Douglass related circle, we have lost a countless number of family members, friends, and associates as you have received in our bereavement notices.

In a year like 2020, it's easier than ever to lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. Besides the usual distractions, we may also be contending with disappointment and loneliness as we face a socially distanced Christmas caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are no exception to the afflictive pain and loss caused by this pandemic; in fact, we may have been hit harder than most other groups.

Add this year's financial uncertainty to the pressure to buy the perfect gifts; we may be feeling far from "Merry and Bright."

But what if we as individuals had the opportunity to change our perspective this Christmas Season? What if we could walk through Christmas and into the New Year with a renewed spirit and a refocused mind? We can, by focusing on the Hope that is found in God's promises, take comfort in God's divine peace, rejoice in God's presence, as we learn to love others well.

We want to provide you this final year-end update; despite all the distractions this year, the Douglass Alumni Association has accomplished some important goals: We have completed the Final Drawings for the Douglass Memorial Brick Paver Park, we provided a college scholarship for a high school graduate, we were a sponsor of the MLK parade, we provided Financial Support for the Police Athletic League Summer Camp Program at the Douglass Gymnasium, as well as provided a luncheon at the end-of-year PAL Summer Camp. Most significantly, we submitted the application, which was approved, for the Florida Landmark Historical Markers for Harry T. Moore & Florida Memorial College. Once the Pandemic is under control, plans will be put in place to install these historic landmarks. We would be remiss if we failed to acknowledge and thank the 47-individual donors who contributed to covering these two markers' costs.

We conclude by saying that the real significance of the Christmas season reminds us of the One who is worthy of all our Praise. May you 'all be granted the glory of Faith, the blessing of Hope, and the Peace of His love at Christmas time and forever. Merry Christmas to ALL!

The Board of Directors,
Douglass Alumni Assn, Inc.

A 5-year journey to honor and remember one of the most renowned Suwannee County natives, Harry Tyson Moore, concluded on Friday, May 8, 2020, when the State of Florida Division of Historical Resources approved a Historical Marker to be erected in Live Oak in the near future.

Harry T. Moore was a man before his time in terms of civil rights impact. His significant sacrifice in his pursuit of freedom is one of the noblest endeavors in the pre-civil rights era of the 50s and 60s. His persistent activism threatened the established social order of the time, and Harry T. and his wife Harriette were assassinated in their home in Mims, Florida, Dec 25, 1951. In the entirety of the civil rights struggle, only a few prominent civil rights leaders have sacrificed more than Harry T. Moore. The history of the civil rights struggle in Florida and nationally is built around his efforts to organize, petition, and communicate the cause of equality of African American citizens.

Also, the Division of Historical Resources approved a Historical Marker to be erected on the site where Florida Memorial College (F.M.C.) once stood in Live Oak. F.M.C. was established in 1879. It stood as a lighthouse of promise for generations of African Americans during a period after the Civil War and reconstruction. During this period, there were few opportunities for African Americans to pursue an education. F.M.C. operated in Live Oak despite enormous challenges until 1941. F.M.C., now Florida Memorial University, still exists in Miami, Florida.
