Dear Valued Residents of Live Oak,
Local 2481 has recently learned that discussions are underway among some city council members regarding Suwannee County Fire Rescue "absorbing" the Live Oak Fire Department. While this proposal may be in its early stages, we believe it demands the immediate and serious attention of every resident we proudly serve. This is a decision that should be made by the taxpayers, not by a select few who may not fully grasp the profound impact it could have, all for the sake of potential short-term financial savings for the city.
We want to make our position unequivocally clear: The Firefighters of the City of Live Oak vehemently oppose this change. We are dedicated men and women, many of whom have built our careers here, choosing to serve you day after day. For decades, some of us have committed our professional lives to Live Oak. This is more than a job; it's our way of life, and we are deeply invested in continuing to protect this community.
Beyond our personal commitment, we firmly believe that the services and protection we currently offer the city are unmatched and difficult to replicate.
Rapid Response: Our average response time of three minutes is critical. This speed significantly impacts fire attack, allowing for quicker knockdowns and drastically reducing property damage.
Local Expertise: We work hand-in-hand with the City's Water Department, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of hydrants and their operational status. This local intelligence enables us to strategize more precise and rapid fire attacks, avoiding problematic or out-of-service hydrants and saving invaluable time during emergencies.
Exceptional Service & Savings: Everything we do is focused on providing best-in-class service. Our rigorous training is tailored to specific city responses, and we proudly maintain an ISO rating of Class 3. This high rating directly translates to substantial savings for homeowners – potentially hundreds of dollars annually on insurance premiums.
Enhanced EMS Coverage: Since February 1, 2025, we've begun running EMS calls within city limits, in partnership with Suwannee County Fire Rescue. Our strategic location and rapid response capabilities mean we are often the first responders on scene during medical emergencies, providing crucial immediate aid without additional cost to the city. We are incredibly grateful to Chief Dan Miller and the personnel of Suwannee County Fire Rescue for this collaborative effort, which further enhances your safety.
It's vital to understand that fire and emergency services are not, and should never be, considered a "money-making" venture. Suggesting the elimination of the Live Oak Fire Department implies that the value of your safety is secondary to municipal bank account balances. While Suwannee County Fire Rescue does excellent work, their resources are already stretched covering their existing jurisdiction and residents.
This proposed absorption, even if presented as a cost-neutral solution, will undoubtedly come at a significant long-term cost to Live Oak residents:
Loss of Control: Once fire services are transferred to the county, the City of Live Oak will lose all operational control and decision-making power regarding coverage, staffing, and service levels within your own city.
Increased Costs for Less Service: The current ISO Class 3 rating, which saves homeowners and businesses considerable money on insurance, will likely be lost. Reinstating such a rating would require millions of dollars in county investment for equipment, personnel, and infrastructure – costs that will ultimately be borne by you, the taxpayer.
Future Tax Hikes: Without city oversight, the county could unilaterally increase fire taxes or response fees for city residents.
Risk of Reduced Coverage: The county could prioritize its primary tax base, potentially leading to closures or reduced staffing at the city station, leaving Live Oak vulnerable with no recourse.
We are appealing to you, the residents, to speak up immediately to your city council members. Tell them you oppose losing your dedicated fire protection, losing your city fire department, and paying more for significantly less service and safety. Your voice is crucial in protecting our community's future.
