I would like to officially congratulate our first three Littleton Trails Hikers to complete the 2026 Littleton Trails Hike 50 & Hike 100 Challenges!

David N. Precht was the first of 2026 to complete BOTH the Hike 50 and Hike 100 Challenges!
Shortly after him was Sarah Donovan and her son Aidan who both completed the Hike 50 Challenge.

I admire them all for completing these challenges so quickly! I wish I could get out on our trails as often as they have shown they can do this!

LCT is in the process of receiving the order of new Hiking Challenge patches for each 2026 Challenge. David, Sarah and Aidan will receive them once we have them in hand.

I encourage everyone to continue enjoying Littleton's Trails as they complete these challenges!
Happy Hiking!

Birding walk with Greg Clark this morning was a lot of fun. We saw and heard many birds as we walked through Newtown Hill and the Williams property. I, for one, was delighted to see an Oriole, and to learn how to attract them in my yard.

Ready to see a lot of birds and get some exercise? The next birding walk lead by Greg Clark will be on Sunday, May 31, from 7:00-10:00 AM at Newtown Hill and Williams Land. There should be a lot of birds there by then. It’s a longer walk and starts earlier than the previous two, but the group will be covering two properties.

The group will walk about 2 miles on a wooded trail looking for newly arrived summer birds and year round residents. Birds to see might include Baltimore Orioles, Indigo Buntings, Tree Swallows, and Eastern Bluebirds.

Use 559 Newtown Road, Littleton, on GPS for meeting location. Take the access road on the left side of the mailbox. Sign indicating Newtown Hill Conservation Land seen at bottom of the road.

Please come prepared with binoculars (if you have them), sturdy waterproof shoes, and tick and bug protection. You should also bring water and a snack.

This is a free event, but registration is required.

Silent Spring II: The Hidden Danger of Yard Pesticides

Wondering about the use of pesticides in your yard? Worried about the effects of these chemicals on people, animals, insects, and our environment? Don't miss this opportunity to learn more!

Wilson Kerr will present about this topic at the Reuben Hoar Library.

Tuesday, May 19, 6:00—8:00 PM
Sturtz Meeting Room
Reuben Hoar Library
35 Shattuck Street, Littleton, MA, 01460

Forty percent of all insect species now face extinction. US Monarch butterfly populations are down 80-90% in the last 20 years. Since 1970, the number of songbirds in the United States has dropped by over 3 billion.

Annually in the US, a staggering 80 million pounds of pesticides are applied to our yards, and yet most people have little to no knowledge regarding the risks and dangers they pose to people, pets and our environment. The popularity of highly toxic “Neonics” is particularly alarming and yet most municipalities do not regulate the use of these toxins and other pesticides on private property.

This month, Wilson Kerr will present on this topic with the hope of raising awareness and informing our community. He will also cover some practical, effective non-toxic alternatives. Wilson writes the monthly award-winning Time Outdoors column for The Concord Bridge and is an amateur naturalist and avid outdoorsman. He has 2 young daughters and has developed a personal interest in the largely unregulated use of lawn pesticides (and why towns cannot or will not restrict their use). Wilson grew up in Belmont and has lived in Concord for 12 years.

Participation is limited. Register for this program: https://littletonma.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/silent-spring-ii-the-hidden-danger-of-yard-pesticides/

The Art Lazarus Trail on the Long Lake Park Conservation Area is officially open!

We gathered on Sunday, May 3, to open the trail. Art was an active conservation volunteer in Littleton for 33 years between 1984 and 2017. From building trails to publishing the Littleton Conservation Trust Trail Guide, the energy and determination that Art directed toward conservation has directly and indirectly benefited many people in Littleton.

A group of friends and family members hiked up from Middlesex Drive where a grand opening sign and ribbon waited. After members of Art's family cut the ribbon, we walked the trail together, accessed QR codes that give further information about wildlife and plants that visitors might see, and then came back to enjoy refreshments.

The Art Lazarus Trail project was spearheaded by Jim O'Neil and took eight years of planning and work by Jim and many other trail volunteers to complete.

Please take the time to visit this trail often to enjoy the outdoors, observe birds, and glimpse other wildlife.
