Did you know that the white cane wasn’t always welcomed in public spaces, and blind people had to fight for the independence and equal access we deserve today? That’s right! Something that gives us so much freedom today has a history rooted in breaking barriers and changing the way society sees blindness. In the 1930s, advocates like George A. Bonham in the United States and Guilly d’Herbemont in France helped advance the use of white canes to make blind pedestrians more visible and support independent travel. As blind people continued fighting for equal rights and opportunities, the white cane became a powerful symbol of independence. On October 6, 1964, Congress authorized the annual observance of White Cane Safety Day, and President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed October 15, 1964, as the first official White Cane Safety Day. Today, National White Cane Safety Day is about more than raising awareness. It’s about celebrating what blind people are capable of doing, educating our communities, and reminding the world that we deserve the same freedom, respect, and opportunities as everyone else! Our white canes are an extension of us, and just like you wouldn’t want someone grabbing your arm and pulling you in a direction without asking, we appreciate that same respect for our canes. They help us detect obstacles, identify landmarks, learn our surroundings, and navigate both familiar and unfamiliar spaces. Sometimes, finding an obstacle is exactly what we need to learn our environment and build our confidence in getting around independently. So, the next time you see someone using a white cane and want to offer a helping hand, simply ask first and allow us to tell you what works best for us. Our canes help us travel safely, build confidence, and explore the world around us. Unless we are in immediate danger, trust us to do our thing and let the white cane do its job! Our white canes give us freedom, independence, confidence, empowerment, strength, pride, and courage. They give us the ability to explore the world, go after our dreams, and do the things we want to do. Today, we celebrate the white cane and everything it represents. We are challenging misconceptions and showing the world that blindness does not mean helplessness. Our white canes are symbols of independence, possibility, and the freedom to find our own way. Happy National White Cane Safety Day from the Colorado Center for the Blind!!! 💙🦯🤍

Blindness isn’t one-size-fits-all. This Blindness Equality Achievement Month, we’re breaking down the misconceptions and reminding everyone that blindness does not automatically mean seeing total darkness. Some blind people see light, shadows, shapes, and movement, while others may have spots in their vision where they can see pretty well. Even two people with the exact same eye condition can experience their vision completely differently. There are so many terms people use to describe their vision, including legally blind, low vision, visually impaired, and totally blind. You may also notice that the term low vision is being used more often, as some people prefer it over visually impaired. At the end of the day, everyone has their own preferences, and that matters! Legally blind generally means having vision of 20/200 or worse in the better eye with the best possible correction, or a visual field that meets the legal definition. But here’s what we really want people to understand. How much someone can see does not determine what they are capable of achieving! At the Colorado Center for the Blind, we represent blindness as a whole. We don’t believe a person’s level of vision should determine their independence, their opportunities, or their ability to succeed. That’s why we teach nonvisual skills using learning shades. Whether someone has some usable vision or no usable vision at all, our students learn to build confidence, independence, and the skills they need to live the lives they want. Under those shades, we are all learning, growing, and proving that blindness is not a barrier to achievement! This Blindness Equality Achievement Month let’s challenge the stereotypes, change the conversation, and recognize that blind people are capable of so much more than society often realizes. We may experience blindness differently, but we all deserve the same opportunities to learn, work, travel, achieve, and live life to the fullest. Different levels of vision, equal opportunities, and no limits on what blind people can achieve! 💙🦯🤍

Now THIS is what empowerment looks like! During Blindness Equality Achievement Month, we’re celebrating recent CCB graduate Cheydon Brewster and an accomplishment that deserves to be celebrated! Over several months, Cheydon worked independently in the CCB woodshop to create an incredible rain stick, and he did that! This is more than a woodshop project. It’s a powerful reminder of what blind people can accomplish when given the right tools, training, opportunities, and high expectations. Cheydon trusted his skills, worked through challenges, and brought his vision to life independently, and he is incredibly proud of what he accomplished. At the Colorado Center for the Blind, we believe blindness does not mean inability. We believe in independence, opportunity, and breaking down the barriers that tell blind people what they cannot do. Cheydon, we see you, we celebrate you, and we are so proud of you! Your accomplishment is proof that when blind people are empowered to learn, create, build, and achieve, there are NO limits to what we can accomplish.

October is Blind Equality Achievement Month, and we are PROUD to celebrate what this month represents! Equality, Independence, Opportunity, and the limitless possibilities of blind people! At the Colorado Center for the Blind, we know firsthand that blindness does not mean our lives have to be smaller, our dreams have to be limited, or our possibilities have to be restricted. We may do some things differently, but different does NOT mean less! Blind people can go to school, build careers, raise families, run businesses, travel the world, cook, clean, use technology, read and write, advocate for ourselves and others, fall in love, get married, chase our dreams, and accomplish things that people once told us were impossible! We can explore, create, lead, serve, succeed, and LIVE! CCB, gives blind people the skills, confidence, and opportunity to discover just how capable they truly are. We believe in independence. We believe in high expectations. We believe in breaking down barriers and challenging the assumptions that society has placed on blind people for far too long. And most importantly, we believe there are NO LIMITS to what blind people can accomplish when we have the opportunity, the training, and the confidence to go after it. Blindness is a characteristic, not a ceiling on our potential. So this month, we are celebrating every blind person who is out here working, traveling, learning, creating, leading, loving, raising families, pursuing dreams, and making things happen. We are capable! We are independent! We are powerful! We are LIMITLESS! We are members of society who deserve the same equality as everyone else! We are not defined by what we cannot see. We are defined by what we dare to believe, what we choose to accomplish, and the lives we choose to live. Blindness has no limits, so neither do we! 💙🦯🤍

Colorado may be cooling down, but WE’RE still heating things up! 🎣It’s the last day of summer, and we weren’t about to let the season slip away without squeezing in ONE more adventure! It’s been an incredibly active summer at the Colorado Center for the Blind, and what better way to wrap it up than with a little fishing? We headed out to a privately owned lake near Waterton Canyon for a fishing clinic through Colorado Parks and Wildlife where our staff and students experienced learning fishing skills, enjoying the outdoors, and proving once again that blindness is NOT a barrier to adventure! At the Colorado Center for the Blind, we believe blindness is simply one characteristic of a person, not a limitation n what we can learn, experience, or accomplish. Whether we’re navigating a new trail, learning a new skill, getting out on the water, or casting a line, blind people are out here living full, active, independent lives. We don’t just talk about independence, we get out there and LIVE it! So, as we reel in the final day of summer, we’re celebrating another season of adventure, confidence, growth, and possibility. Here’s to cooler days, bigger adventures, and showing the world that blind people can do it all! 💙🦯🤍
