Optimists frequently say “It’s All About the Kids.” (In fact it’s on the cover of this issue.) Our Optimist Club has had so many wonderful programs through the years that support the youth of our community, including BEE awards, Shiloh House, Bowling, Tri-Star Basketball, Brain Bowl, Know Brainer and many more. Optimist International sponsors three very important scholarship contests, where students can earn money to pursue opportunities in higher education: Essay Contest, Oratorical Contest and the Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH). Contests are conducted at the Club level, then Zone and Regional, and at the District level. District-level scholarships are
funded by the Optimist International Foundations.
Our former OCL President Darrell Schulte is again hosting our Oratorical Contest, on Wednesday evening, March 13, this year at our regular meeting place at the East Event Center in Littleton. His excellent article in the Denver Post “Your Hub” section is featured in this issue of the OCL Clarion. The topic for the 2023-24 school year is “How to Change the World With Optimism.” The winners at our club level will receive medallions and cash prizes, $500, $250, and $125. The Optimist International Oratorical Contest is one of our
most important projects, and we hope you’ll come to support the orators.
Carolyn Walker, Michael Corey and Dick Quinlan were excellent judges in our club’s annual Essay Contest. We had 24 students competing in the contest, and the first, second, third and fourth place winning essayists are all from Powell Middle School.
The topic of this year’s contest is “Optimism: How It Connects Us.” (Your editor is again the essay Chairman.) The four top students were rated very close by our judges, and our Board agreed to
award all four, who are all expected to be at our Friday morning meeting on March 15th. We will present our winners with their cash awards, ($500, $250, $125 and $75), medallions and certificates, and will ask them to read their essays to our members and guests. The first place winning essay by Cole Littlefield, which is truly inspirational and is featured in this issue of the OCL Clarion, has been delivered to the District Chairman for consideration at
the next level. At the Colorado-Wyoming District Contest, the winner will receive a $2500 college scholarship. We encourage our members to come out to support the young contestants at our events. Our live cheers, applause and admiration put some real punch behind the words “It’s All About the Kids.”
